My Mauser Kar98k jams on the first round if the mag has five rounds but cycles flawlessly otherwise. What could be causing this.

How tough is it to jam the last round in? Take the floorplate out and make sure it’s clean. Follower not binding, Spring is on etc.

Where does it jam? Hard to strip the first cartridge? Or?

Seems to have problems picking up the first round. It gets jammed between the top lip of the receiver/magazine box and the second round once it is about a quarter of the way up the feed ramp and then you have to slam the bolt hard to chamber it. However, with 4 rounds or less it has no problems and chambers smoothly. It is almost as if the follower spring is pushing too hard.

The last round is a little harder then the other 4 to chamber but not extremely difficult

I wish I could everytime I try to post photos though I get a bounce back saying I haven’t contributed enough to the forums to post pictures yet. It feels like a spring problem to me to like maybe it got stretched since it is only a problem with 5 rounds. If I load 4 i can cycle the whole magazine just fine.

Is the spring on your magazine upside down?

Is it original or Russian capture (rebuild) parts may not be the right size is also potential.

It is a Russian capture so there is a good chance parts just don’t fit, even after cleaning and oil the drop plate I still have a devil of a time getting it out I think it’s just a tight fit.

It is definitely possible the spring is upside down, which way is the correct way?

Sorry if it's sounds like a stupid question, but are you are trying to push feed a round placed in the chamber or on the follower floor plate instead of being fed from the magazine. If this is correct, the rifle is not designed to do so. Feed from the mag as it's designed to.

Nope I place all 5 rounds in the magazine. I’ll try flipping the spring didn’t even think it could be upside down. It’s weird to me that it is only the first round. Hopefully it got messed up post battle or I feel bad for the poor guy who had the same problem I do in the heat of battle as the jammed round is hard to get out of the mag

I'd have to tear one down to look but if memory serves correct there is a slightly longer and slightly shorter end. I cant remember which end fit in that little slot on my magazine cover. But have a look and see if it makes sense to flip it the other way. Taking pressure off the spring should allow it to slide out relatively easily.

Cheers, I’ll give it a try tonight.

I removed the spring to check it and it can only go in one way, however I have noticed I need more force to place the last round in the mag and really need to slam the bolt to chamber it.

I feel like a big dummy but my feed issue has been resolved by making absolutely sure the top round is as far back as it can go in the magazine so that it is pressed right against the bolt. If I do this I can cycle all 5 rounds fine.
