Kar98K

I appreciate the advice! I was planning on buying the mauser k98 as secondary rifle I would shoot on occasion. I am also planning t buy a marlin xt-22 that I can shoot the crap out of to help sharpen my skills.

Update*****

I called RCMP this morning and was told that my photo is being scanned today and sent to the Alberta CFO, so I think this means I’m close? Also called the gun store and they said they would let me place a deposit. WHat kind of things should I be looking for when I go today to get a good rifle?

Went to the gun store today and put deposit down. A little more info to get help figuring out what I got.

Manufactured in 1940 with mfg/factory code 147 so from my reading I believe it was manufactured in 1940 at J.P. Sauer & Sohn Suhl.

The serial numbers on the stock, receiver and barrel all matched. The serial number on the drop plate did not match but an electro pencil serial number had been added that match.

All German/nazi marking were visible and unpeened. No peened RC “x” was on receiver but there was what appeared to be an electro pencil x on top of receiver.

Missing sight hood, but did have cleaning rod. Colour was dark brown with some signs of wear but in very good shape. Did notice the wood under the buttplate was raw coloured/ tan.

This to me is an odd specimen since it had indications of being a RC (ie electro pencil marking, non original drop plate) but also in my opinion has indications of being German (nazi markings, dark brown not reddish in colour, and mostly matching parts)

From your description it sounds like you found a typical RC. You'll love it. Mine is a 1939 from 147 as well, the earlier K98s did not use a sight hood so your's may not be missing anything. Google is your friend as far as finding out if it does indeed accept a sight hood. To complete the set you can get reproduction or genuine bayonets and slings online.

Keep your 8mm brass incase you start to reload down the road, otherwise I'll be happy to take it off your hands!

Post some pictures when you finally get her home, what a great first rifle!

mine didnt have a hood installed but they gave me one in the box, but it doesnt fit as its a differnt style, however the one on my m48 would fit it, i suppose mine is a earlier style as well.

I found a helpful YouTube video that covers the K98 evolution, looks like didn’t get sight hoods till about late 40/early 41

I have yet to find a wartime German k98 that doesn't head space even with mismatched bolt but always wise to check. The biggest things with RC are the bore, and stock condition. These stocks are old. After bore condition, Id look at the recoil lugs in the stock. Make sure the wood isn't soft around it, and the lug hasn't been set back. Avoid that one if you want a shooter. Codes with Rc are pretty much irrelevant. Its neat to find one you like but condition before code with RC imho.

Post what you buy and I'm sure we can explain all the markings and such. Some cool marks and parts show up on Rc rifles.

Yes, late 1940 guns started getting hood, but all in 41. You do see alot of earlier guns wth hoods though. They were updated in the field to take a hood or it had a repair, in which case its updated at that time.

Barrel and receiver will always match, even with RC. They did not remove barrels. And the stock number on the side is not original, its part of the refurb process. Post pics if you can, Ill tell you everything about it. And if you have slots of a hood and need one, PM me

Will post when I purchase. It seemed to be in decent shape.

I hope my PAL doesn’t take too long, it is supposedly with the AB CFO as of today, so hopefully quick. The gun store put a sold sign on it, but wouldn’t take money till I showed my PAL. And they also didn’t seem thrilled about holding it saying my PAL could take another 4 months.

Do you know anyone who could go buy it for you and hold it and then sell it to you when you get your license? Also RC are common, if you miss it, you wont have trouble finding another.

No unfortunately I don’t know someone who could purchase for me. They do have 8 of them at the store, but only two that had what I would consider good stocks.

Sounds like you already bought it but Lever sells typical RC's for $650 and had tons of them recently. Also Canada Ammo just put 8mm ammo on sale. less than a buck around if you buy 240.

I haven’t paid yet, they wouldn’t take a deposit without my PAL which was weird. I’ll check lever since they are 150$ cheaper, will they send photos of individual models, or do you just hope for the best?

Hopefully that sale lasts or the RCMP rush my application :(

Typically the RC ones will have the set screws, cleaning rod and sight hood missing (if these items were ever fitted in the first place). The receiver serial no is electro-penciled on major components, with previous numbers ground off.

I doubt they will send pics, Lever is a no-frills kind of place. Do you have any friends in Vancouver you could get to help out? RC's are all pretty much the same although some still have the swastikas intact. I waited and bought an RC off EE that did not have anything peened and paid $750 for it. If you can pick your own and find a lesser molested one from your local gun shop then go ahead and do that.

**I just checked the Lever site and it shows they are sold out so this is all moot.

YEah I noticed they are sold out too. The one I picked out has very minimally worn stock thought the buttplate seemed loose so I hope I can tighten it. I like being able to pick out, my local store has 8 and they range from nice stock to quite beaten up

Honestly I wouldn't be in any rush. What your looking at is a very common relatively low desired firearm. Plenty of RCs out there and they aren't flying off the shelves at those prices (personally I think it's too high for what your receiving, this being from someone which bought one at that price).

Where else could I find them? My online searching has only turned up stores that sold them but are now sold out, I felt I was lucky to find them at the store I did, so I felt rushed to move on them.
