A gentleman blew his beautiful Manurhin Model 73 in 357 MAG (5.250" barrel) this PM at our club. Luckily, he was not hurt but the revolver is now a very expensive paperweight. Those revolvers are beatifully made, no longer readily available and EXPENSIVE.

The quality isn't hot, the pics are off my cell phone and the lighting was not very good.

Further comments are not required from my part..XCEPT that I'm NOT the gentleman in question..

P.S. Suggested Retail Price is $ 1399.00 US$$'s

Trigger locks

Actually, no it isn't. Until the CFC recognizes the firearm as destroyed it is still just that, a restricted firearm. Without the trigger lock he would be breaking the law. Remember, common sense plays no part in the legal system. Just because you, me and the typical five-year old would see that as a piece of scrap metal doesn't mean a cop or a judge would!

Anyway, I'm sorry the gentleman lost a nice firearm and I'm glad he wasn't injured.

What happened...bullet lodged in the bore or a double charge? :(

Barrel unscathed..Concensus of the members present was a double charge OR possibly a max 357 load in a 38 special case. (The case being shorter, the pressures would have gone way up)

No one really was interested in asking specific questions to that man, he was really shaken. It wasn't the time.. Maybe when the smoke clears (no pun intended) we may know more on the incident.

BTW as mentioned, until the gun is de-registered (damaged beyond use), you still have to apply the regulations..CRAZY.. just one more stupidity of that gun control law.

If Manurhin's claim that their guns will take a "double load" unscathed is true. I wouldn't want to test that claim out myself.
Then what could have happened is a squib load which lodged the bullet in the chamber of the barrel, then if he fired a second shot, the bullet lodged in the barrel would have prevented the second shot from exiting the chamber thus increasing the pressure resulting in the kboom.
The gentleman mentioned he was loading 10.x grains of whatever powder... would not a .357 cartridge hold 20.x grains and still be able to seat the bullet?
Either way, it was human error, be it squib load followed by 2nd shot or a double magnum load. He is one lucky dude to have all his fingers and his face intact! His revolver could always be mounted and displayed sat the club as to the possible dangers to reloading.

I don't see how a squib could be the cause without bulging the barrel. It's hard to guess the cause without a bit more information. Like was it his first shot of the day with that ammo? 38 Special or 357 Magnum? A 357 charge in a 38 Special could cause damage but not like that IMHO. A heavier bullet would be the same. Double charge or wrong powder is more likely.

Glad the guy is OK.
