keeping bears out of a hunt camp

if you are thinking electric, solar fencers can be had at any Peavey mart.

run the + and - as 2 wires 4-6 inches apart rather than the - to ground.

Bears hair is thick enough they might not get a burst through it with a to ground ground.
Run parallel 4-6 inches apart they'll touch both with their face first time.
You can do more than 1 run as well.
Alternate + and - 4-6" apart several times.
I built a stallion enclosure that had 6 live and 6 ground wires on a 5 foot height.Worked wonders.

Get a few cans of "Quick start" (ether) and rub them well with bacon fat. Put them around the sight and let the bears bite into them, .......they won't come back!!

I was thinking that a couple cans of pepper spray wrapped on bacon, could be ...entertaining...

Bacon fat on the fencer wire... Or Chocolate.

Possibly enough to make for the required bad associations that could convince a bear that there are easier pickings around.

Cheers

That is one big mess! Beautiful hunting cabin! (after the clean up ofcourse). I think its just one of those things thats bound to happen! I think the nails might help some what, but if a bears going to want to get in, I think hes goin to get in hah. I hope you find a solution though that does look like quite a pain in the butt to clean up every year. I do like the electric fence idea!

Mothballs.

Put them by the door and the windows.

Seems to work to protect cabins from the grizzlies in northern BC, pretty good.

Bears want in cause they smell food, I guess the mothballs screw with thier sense of smell.

The downside is anything but canned goods is going to have a slight mothball flavour.:)

Might work, but my God how many moths would you have to castrate to get even a small bag??/:confused:

This will work.
Take the chain link fence you have and put it on the cabin walls. get a solar electric fencer and hook to the chain link. Trust me when I say it will knock him on his keester.
If you have enough chain link lay it on the ground and attach your ground wire to it . He will think he is in a bagel toaster.
It takes a couple days to stop laughing if you happen to see it live.:D

My Gang's moose camp has metal bars over the windows since a bear jumped through in the middle of the night while while people were sleeping.

I dont' know of any bears coming around in the last 4-5 years since the surroundings are kept cleaner and fish guts are dealt with before getting ashore.

Maybe our bears are not as smart as yours but in over 40 years this is as far as they get. The black fibre board breaks away and they seem to loose interest before trying to pull away the plywood.

The top fly was not damaged by bears it just rotted and needs replacing every few years.

Maybe they are afraid they have to get a tetanus shot or that it is going to collapse on them. I would build a camp like this:
