I have used finger cots from a drug store they work great.
Then I tried electric tape and now use that.

The Swedes used little metal discs held on with wax on their Mausers.

I just use electrical tape and wrap another strip on the barrel for spare or other uses cheap and effective.

+1 to the solo rifle cover, I have a rip off caldwell one and it's awesome.

You know those free calendars with the attached paper thin magnets on them from real estate companies or the vets office? I punch those out an just place them on the end of my rifle. Unlike electrical tape the cold does not bother them.
