Word on the net has it that Kel-Tec is releasing a .308 front-ejecting bullpup that accepts FAL magazines. Here's the brochure .pdf:

Anybody heard anything as to it getting into Canada? Assuming that it's built well and actually works, it looks like a nifty rifle, and potentially a non-restricted at that, despite its evil looks :).

It'd be cool for a $600 piece but $2,000-$2,500 USD? What kind of crack are they smokin'? Whatever it is, it's bad sheet!

From what I was told at SHOT, it won't be in production for at least a year. Interesting concept, but I think they are asking to much money for it. The plastic on it feels kind of cheap.

They were showing a prototype and made no bones about it... it's 12 to 18 months away (at least) and may well undergo changes during that timeframe... but it was very interesting. It is a total change in strategy and attitude from their previous offerings... it's not intended to be a cheap or low end product, and at first glance it looked like they may just have something. I can tell you that a number of other manufacturers were taking serious notice of it (which told me they took it quite seriously).

KelTec is also aware that they will have a hurtle to jump when it comes to their past reputation... they are not known for "high quality firearms" but they seem quite prepared to deal with that.

As GT said, I'd be interested in getting hold of one to play with... very compact and a lot of potential.

The 18" version was unbelieveably compact... at first glanced it looked the size of a CQB AR (but quite heavy)... I have a nice side by side picture of the full length version with the bi-pod, next to the CQB shorty version (tried to upload it here but got an error message). Both were well worth the price they were suggesting if in fact the end product is properly made and reliable.

Just my opinion based on a very quick look... let's see what they do with it before we pass judgement.

Cool... a Questar post :)

I'd totally get one of these if they were coming... if costs were also around the $2000~$2500 range. I really want a .308 Non-restricted semi-auto. I'd love one actually.

What? No comments on the legality of bullpups? I want to say it, but I'm afraid GT will ban me...

Or suffer the wraith of Armedsask!

The Keltec is OK, just like the FS2000 and P90.

Agreed. There's just nothing out there that fits the bill right now.
I hope to build a .308 based on the AR180 action. I'm sure that's at least a year or two away.

With the way things are looking, I might not have to. Seems manufacturers are stepping up the plate.

Yep

In all fairness, the plastic used is probably ABS as it is a prototype. There is no access to the chamber - at least the FN2000 has a toilet door (even though it is not overly useful for IA) I don't think the development is done yet.

However, the compactness of the carbine is scary. Lots of punches in a tiny package. It does not feel like holding a full power battle rifle.

If it is priced the same as the AR10 and DSA FAL, I will buy one to play with.

I'll take one too:)

But you guys already figured that out didn't you:)

I am writing an article on SHOT for the CSSA bi-monthly Bulletin.
I sent a draft to Kel-Tec last night, and got a reply today regarding some questions.
1) if it is fired pointing upwards, will the empty cases fall back into the works?
No, there is something in the ejection chute to prevent this.

2) Will the US STate Dept call it a weapon of war, and ban the export?
Kel-Tec is NOT promoting it as the next great battle rifle, but rather, as a sporting, target, LE type gun

Watch for my article:cool:

Hey, TooTall, got a contact for articles written for the CSSA newsletter? I've got a subject, but am not sure about how to get it published. Got a minute or two to exchange some e-mail about it?

Oh, and on the Kel-Tec...well, my experience with them was basically handling the first (s/n 000001) of their SU-16 rifles. I was not favourably impressed. I'll wait for the judgement of the masses on this one before I'd commit to buying.

Neat idea, and I've been wondering how long it'd take before someone would develop a new rifle that uses FAL mags....I also note that it uses a similar gas system and operating system (tipping bolt, a la SKS/Tokarev) with locking shoulder) as the original FAL.

Anyhow, I await the judgement of the users on this one. Kel-Tec will have to put out a pretty good product to convince me to give them the kind of money that's being bandied about for this rifle.

My understanding is as as long as it can't be fired without the stock it would be legal.

and if the barrel is at least 18.5 inches it would be non-restricted too:D

As noted above, the issue is with the other side of the border.
Strange, isnt it, that the land of the free is causing us up here more headaches that our own gun laws.

On the subject of pure asthetic, I like the look of the rifle. Unlike all the new design coming out, Kel-Tec rifle actually have simpler line to it. It's just progressive enough, but not gawdy like FS2000. If it shoots good, I think it'd be success.

You're welcome.
The black dot just above the barrel, slightly offset to the photo left, (right side of gun) is the ejection chute.
