Why is this rifle not being imported, while the RFB and Sub2000 are? I'd love to try one of these out. Especially at their listed price.

I hate to burst your bubble but the Canadian price will not even come close to the US one. Last I heard from Vault they were "hoping" to bring it in at a retail of $995.00.

WTF!!!
No way they could justify listing it for that price. As they already make 18.5" barrel for this rifle platform and our dollar is at par or above. So what type of excuse are they coming up with now???
This Vault group really now how to take the word value out of an economical value added product.
Now if this is false and only comes in $100 to $200 above MSRP then I am sorry for making these statements. Although after the SUB 2000 pricing fascicle I won't hold my breath.

Overpriced for what it is, but darn cool looking. some day ill buy one, when the price is right and the bugs are worked out.

RANT ALERT:

buy a cheap ar first, this is most important because it shows the gov't that restricted or not the black rifle crowd is not going away. the more ar rifles in the system, the easier it will be to push for non restricted status when the time is right. i know the ar is not the topic of this thread, but the kel tec could follow it to the controlled list if we keep abandoning the ar or the mini 14 in favor of new designs. we need more "hated" rifles in the system to show support regardless of classification. otherwise all the "evil" looking new stuff (kel tec, robarms, tavor) will eventually end up restricted. Serious tinfoil hat on my part but i think all these new cool rifles are going to be short lived enjoyment if we dont push for change.

It's pretty easy, actually.

If you can't afford it, don't buy it.

I've noticed that you bunch of "freedom lovers" really turn a little bit commie when it comes to how much things cost.

"I'll allow them to make a few hundred dollars on it, but if it's more then that it's just OUTRAGEOUS profit and cannot be tolerated"....

You don't like it? Vote with your dollar and move elsewhere. That's how it works.

Buddy I spend more than that on an optic cuz I like it for that week. But let me tell you that the optic is worth that type of money. I am all down for fair market value and the capitalist idea's. Although when you understand the rifle that we are talking about you will then understand were I am coming from.

So please don't tell me that this plastic/pressed barrel is worth anything near the $1200 value. At most $750 CAD is what this platform is worth anything else and this rifle looses all appeal.

:agree: I shop with my feet too but I think it may cause some dealers to think twice before slapping a ridiculous price on something when they see people aren't going to pay it. Wait for it, the "I'll pay $1500-2k for this rifle" crowd will probably be along soon anyway

You guys do know that if the SU 16 is retailing for $995, that is likely the MAP for the rifle, just as $649 was the MAP for the SUB 2000. Also, from what I've heard, the SU 16's being brought into Canada are not the SU 16A (which is the one that comes with the 18.5" barrel), but will be a special run for Canada of a different variant. The MSRP of the SU 16's vary from $665 for the "A" version, to $770 for the "C" version. So let's say the dealers up here are able to buy the "C" version from Vault for the U.S. MSRP (which IMO is optimistic), and they mark it up $225 to $995. This would be a 22.6% markup on the retail price, which isn't huge in the retail game.

Dealers buying in quantity don't pay msrp obviously...
I understand there will be some import costs but I'm not sure it should double the price.

Saying they are just marking up from the msrp which no one in the states sells at, tells us that the dealers are getting them from kel-tec for far less then what you stated at the 700 dollar mark and therefore add a little for import it should be doable in the 750 dollar mark... This is all specualtion though

You're right, it is speculation. Our dealers are not getting these from Kel Tec, they are getting them from Vault Distribution, which is the importer of these to Canada. They handle the importation and all of the paperwork required to get them out of the States. This is quite expensive, especially considering Vault had to apply about 6(?) times for the first export permit before it was approved. Also, both Vault and the dealer need to be making a profit on these. They are businesses, not charities. To think that our dealers are able to buy these rifles from Vault for less than the U.S. MSRP is very optimistic. I really wish people would stop looking at the U.S. retail prices. We're in another country, get over it. Importing stuff isn't free, especially when you're importing small quantities of a specialty item.

This is not wild speculation it is informed speculation as this is what Vault themselves have said on their forum....

"Yes, chambered in .223 Rem and different sights for 2011, like the SU16A2 in the US. The receivers have to marked with the F for Canada as well. Which means Kel-Tec will have to laser etch each rifle.

Price? Well, we are going to do our best to get them out for around $995 CAD.

The pistol grip conversion we will also be making available. "

Say what you will regarding whether they are worth it or not but the numbers are from the horses mouth so to speak.

If they can keep the price around the same as a Ruger Mini-14, then they should sell pretty well, once they come here to Canada. I am in the market for a non restricted .223 semi auto, and although I already own a CZ 858, I'm not a fan of the cz .223 rifle. It has a homeade look to it, in my opinion.

I know that the older Mini-14 rifles have a bad rep, but the newers ones seem to be quite good, and have a loyal following, so I think that that are'nt the same gun they used to be. I would want to see a SU-16 in person, to decide if I am going to buy one, because right now I'm actually leaning towards a Mini-14 as a Non Restricted .223 semi auto, just because the fit and finish is nice, and they are a clean, nice looking gun, that looks like they will last.

If the fit and finish rivals a mini 14, then I will likely get a SU-16, so long as its around the price of a Mini-14.
