Kel-tec SU16

P@rick don't waste your money. With a simple bend of the springs and a little polish here & there you will get a nice 4.5 lb trigger pull and feel manly about it ;)

I tried a single 5.56x45 round in my su-16 yesterday.

primer punch, failed to extract and then it tried to load another round in the chamber which ruined the 2nd round. I actually caught the event on video but I dont know how to upload it. i loaded the mag, aimed and fired. a lot of smoke on the video.

it bothers me that this su-16 is so picky on what it eats. could this be a gas system problem? maybe its over pressured in the barrel or something and not enough gas is escaping. that or the entire chamber/barrel/bolt isnt machined correctly. can anyone point me to where others have this problem and have had it remedied?

im also noticing new burrs on the bolt itself.

I'm not having much luck with my guns it seems. i just heard my S&W i sent out early december hasent even left the shop i sent it to go back to the states for repairs. they estimate another 6 months. No wonder people dont want to buy stuff from the US, poor quality and getting it fixed is like a crime or something. sheesh haha

I will x2 on the Kel-Tec being picky.

I got a load of Chinese .223 and I believe it caused a couple bolt carrier jams. Those on the KTOG forum already read this but basically the bolt carrier rammed close and would not release or could not be pulled back. I had to knock it back with a piece of wood with the aid of an RSO. And after knocking it back discovered that a round had been rammed into the barrel. Worse, my newbie friend had fired another one into the back.

But I'm not going to blame my newb friend yet because I took it away from him and I shot it (after clearing); did not fire but the bolt carrier jammed forward again and I had to slam the bolt group back with wood again.

In each of the rounds that were in the barrel, the primer had not been touched.

After each jam I dropped the mag, cleared and slapped the magazine in. Shot: Clunk! And about handful of FTFs. I finally just put the gun away in embarrassment.

The opinion on KTOG was it was the ammunition. I'm not quite understanding how that jam happens.

Some of the Chinese .223 is not made to the same tolerances as the NA stuff. I had a few boxes of Norinco (yellow box) and some grey box stuff and the case head would not allow the round to chamber in my AR15. I ended up shooting it out of a boltgun. Sounds like you are having the same problem the chamber on the SU16 may not allow the Chinese 223 to seat all the way.

actually it may have caused even more problems -- if it was the ammo that did it. I stripped it down, removed the bolt carrier and lo and behold, the bolt barely moves without pushing it. And the firing pin will not drop out and cannot be pulled out. I think something, grit or some fragment is caught in it. Normally the extractor will snap in and out if you just shake the bolt carrier.

I hope I did not damage it when I knocked the bolt carrier loose.

On the KTOG forum I was advised to give it a blast of brake cleaner or Gun Blaster. I can get brake cleaner but what is Gun Blaster? Another lubricant? Who sells it?

EDIT: Apparently these people used to make it. But I don't see that product any more. What am I looking for?

I don't really see how much more I can do. If you look on this page (it has pics). I can get all the way to trying to remove the firing pin. Without being able to remove the firing pin there's not much more I can do unless I am missing something. I'm new to any kind of gun disassembly, btw, so if I missed something that would be no surprise.

I haven't tried flushing it with the brake cleaner yet as I'm at work and have to go find that stuff.

It sounds like there is something caught under the extractor - like a brass shaving. According to your description you are only at Step 4. You need to complete step 5 and clean everything out of the extractor. If you look at Step 5 (last pic) there is a hole in the bolt - to the left of the hole (according to the pic) there is a small pin. You need to remove that pin and pop off the extractor. If it is like an AR15 (which it really does from the pics) the extractor should come off with a spring. This part is what needs to be cleaned.

Like I mentioned before the Chinese stuff has really funny brass and I got a lot of jams and had to clean the bolt face and extractor quite frequently. Once you clean this part reassemble and lube up - you should be good... Switch to PM if you want more help.

I am at step five. Last night I did remove the "firing pin pin" (part #134). But even with that removed, the firing pin would not drop out. Without the firing pin dropping out, I cannot get to the extractor from what I could see. So, yes, I am stuck in the middle of Step Five.

The manual says that I might need to push the extractor in -- which I can -- to get the pin out or so that I can grip it. The extractor can move fully in that direction (but it feels like it is rubbing on something) but the pin cannot be pulled out. I used a little force but am hesitant to use a lot.

I'm going to try to get some of that brake stuff to try and free up the gunk and then I will give it another try.

Okay the Brake Cleaner did it. I soaked and sprayed the bolt carrier and kept working at it for ten minutes until the bolt worked its way free. There was a fragment of something there and I bet it was a piece of a cartridge though it was hard to tell. I got the firing pin free and disassembled and cleaned all of it. Phew!

Back from the range again for the first time since I cleared that jam and cleaned.

I shot a couple boxes of American Eagle without incident.

Then for yucks went back to that Chinese ammo. Bang .. then second round, CLUNK. I cleared it and the second round had rammed into something. What was it? It was the casing of the first round that had failed to eject.

I took it home and cleaned it again last night and found another fragment that I had punched out of the brass. Happy that it didn't jam this time.

So, I am not going to use that ammo any more. The SU16 seems to demand better stuff I guess.

I've heard the CA is illegal to import in Canada and that only the F model is available for purchase.

And I have been doing ALOT of research on these beauties, I think it's gunna be my first purchase.
