Kel-tech sub 2000 - Any thoughts?

lill lady has one, ive got the JR carbine, both in 9mm w/glock mags.
the sub2k is kinda neet with the folding, but it feels "cheep". her first one had issues with the fire control group, it would fire while on safe, not always good. warrenty service was great, ended up replacing the whole thing. Its way to small for me and im always worried Im going to break it in half.
a cool idea, but Id look for somthing else. if money is keeping you from buying a JR or Thurion or Kriss, just save for a bit longer.
my .02
Cheers

I've got one and I love it. Especially since I replaced the front sight with one from red lion precision. But it is what it is. It's a cheap plastic carbine. Reasonably accurate inside 50m. Lots of fun and cheap to shoot.

I just bought a Sub 2000 and put 500 rounds though it on the weekend.

Thoughts:
-It's not cheaply made. I'd made to keep it inexpensive. Barrels are 4140. Other materials are polymer reinforced Zytel.

-I had 10 stoppages, all of them stove-pipe type malfunctions. I was using 115g MFS Ammo and I've read that the Kel Tec likes heavier ammo, especially during the break in period. This particular rifle has about 1000 rounds through it so it's well into it's break in period. These type of malfunctions are unacceptable, but I'll try it with heavier ammo before I decide what to do with it. I'll try polishing the bolt and checking the receiver tube for burrs. Also, being a blow-back action, it s**ts where it eats, and MFS ammo really gums it up.

-It's very light, weighing just over four pounds. You could easily carry it in a backpack all day and never notice it. The push button safety can be operated with your thumb and the trigger is Ok. You can get a good C-clamp grip on the forearm to control the snappy recoil. About that: You really notice the recoil! I have a nice bruise on my shoulder after yesterday's session.

-The sights are very crude. Despite the great design work done on this rifle, they s**t the bed with the sights. You really have to get into the stock to use them. The rear peep is fine but the front sight should have been redesigned long ago. The nut and screw actually backed out during my test. Luckily I found them in the dirt, and was able to screw it back down. If you have a Sub 2000 Locktite this area. I finally figured out how to adjust the sights and once I did it was right on at 15 yards (if you play the offset) and perfect at 75 yards. It hit the 75 yard gongs with authority.

-It requires some training to get used to the manual of arms. I think I've got it down and may post a video about that in a later thread.

-Glock mags are a nice feature and mag changes were reasonably fast. Gen 3,4 and 33/10 mags dropped free.

EDIT: One other thing: Field stripping for cleaning is extremely easy to do. Pop a pin, pull out the bolt group, clean away.

I'll be doing a full review sometime later, but that's all I can think of for now. If it worked 100% I'd probably feel a lot better about this rifle, but for now the Jury is still out.

I've got one and agree with what TrevorF said - "it is what it is". Despite feeling a bit on the cheap side, mine has been drop dead reliable. It's reasonably accurate (despite the crappy sights), and light weight. The only real gripe I have with it is that it's not very friendly to us left handed folk, as ejected brass likes to smack me on the right cheek. I may attempt to make myself some form of brass catcher or brass deflecter for it to see if that may remedy the issue.

How did you get the red lion part?

What type of ammo do you feed it?

There's not much there to clean. Skip to 7:12 of the video. I intend to spray it with G96 and wipe it out as best I can. Which to be honest, is all I do with any of my other carbines.

hmm, learn somthing new every day..still a bit of work to get in there...but its tolibl' at least lol. And to think there are people out there who think the jr is a pita to brake down and clean.

I still think it feels cheep, but it goes bang and its fun, and thats what really matters lol

^^I contacted them. Here's the e-mail they sent back...
Sorry for the delay in getting back.
Not yet, we talked to a few guys and as of now I don't believe any are interested in importing anything in bulk which is pretty much a neccessity to keep the exporting/importing costs per unit reasonable. Sorry I can't be of more help but I'll put you down to be emailed if that changes.

Thanks,
Red Lion Precision, LLC

They are looking for someone to import their parts in quantity.....Dealers??? I want their front sight (without rail).

I'd be in for a few Red Lion parts too. With all the SU16 and Sub2K in the country I'm sure they would sell alot of their stuff here.

Agreed. I'd be up for the Sub-2000 front sight at the very least, and probably other stuff later on. Surely there's plenty of demand, the question is are any dealers listening?
