Keltec RBD or Type 97

I love both.

T97 works great. Some weird ergonomics for the mag release.

RDB works great also, good trigger and able to be upgraded with spring kits.
I don’t like the mag release on it… probably more so than the T97 one.

There is a nice mag release upgrade but if I remember correctly…the GOOD one is hard to source now?

The way I see it is that if they were both bolt guns, the t97 would be a No.4 Mk1 and the RBD would be a Savage model 10... both designed for different reason but based on the same concept and both will send lead down range. You just have to pick your poison.

RDB wins. They type 97 has terrible ergonomics to get at the mag release and safety. Both are accurate and reliable but the manual of arms to run the T97 is awkward and slow.

Edit to add: The T97's trigger is a pile of absolute mush that has no discernable point where it will fire. The RDB has a trigger that is much easier to get a consistent trigger pull.

As mentioned, if you're left handed, you should probably wear a mouth guard when you shoot the T97, because you're gonna chip a tooth if you don't.

I have the gen 1 with the t97.ca FTU, and it's much better quality than the OEM rails on the Gen 2 and Gen 3, which have been known to come loose during firing, screwing up your zero. No issues with it other than a bad mag when I first got it in 2013. I've put thousands and thousands of rounds though it, including steel core (A LOT of steel core) and it ate everything. I run it on the highest gas setting to ensure everything cycles. This also destroys brass, so if you're looking to reload, it's not a good idea. And even if you aren't running it on the highest gas setting, finding your brass afterwards is a chore on its own, as it launches it into the next town.

Overall, the thing just works. It's not super fancy, nor is it made with some revolutionary technology. It's simple and goes bang when you pull the trigger.

My RDB experience is limited, but I didn't like it. It went bang when I pulled the trigger, but experiencing a jam, given its unique ejection system, added a layer of complication that I didn't find very convenient when clearing. Other than that, it was solid. The whole outer shell was plastic though, with some weak areas. My whole outer on my Tavor is also plastic, but it's re-enforced with steel inside where it counts. If you don't plan on using your rifle as a blunt melee weapon, you're probably going to be fine...

When it comes to accuracy, my T97 was more accurate, but it's also more accurate than my Tavor.

It all comes down to personal preference really.

The trigger on the T97 is pretty light (compared to the mushy trigger on my Tavor), and after years of experience, you learn the sweet spot, and it's pretty good from then on out.

The safety is certainly in a bizarre spot if you don't have the LHG, but I rarely use it anyway. I see people using their left hand to try to hit the mag release, and it just looks odd. I use my right hand, and can keep the rifle at the ready with my left (tucking it into my shoulder), and swap mags fine. Personal experience I guess.

not for the caliber sold in canada ...

Indian military, uses the 5.56 in that rifle. It is the same as if you said that the M4 or AR15 is not a military rifle if it is chambered in in 300BLK because the UK and the Netherlands officially uses it, the USA un-officially use it BUT Canada doesn't.

The statement stands - it was a design requested and completed with the intention of producing an infantry weapon. The Kel Tec was designed and produced to make money. I think there's a difference there. Users in 5.56 include Pakistan, Rwanda, Cambodia and the Philippines as well as Sudan and Venezuela. To be fair, they're all 3rd world or communist countries, and it's no M4, but it is a combat weapon design, suitably modified for civilian use.

QBZ95 in 5.8 is uses by Pakistan, Laos and Rwanda to name a few. The Cambodian, Philippine, Myranmar, Sudanese and Venezuelan army uses the QBZ97 which is in NATO 5.56. The t97 is the QBZ97.
