Kestrel Wind Meter Guidance

I don't understand "the 303 drifts 5 MOA to the left @1000 yds", that doesn't make sense on its own. (a .303 bullet would be blown 5 MOA at 1000 yards by a 3mph-4mph wind, but I don't think that's what they are talking about?)

Spin drift?

Spin drift?

(@kirk930 - probably not; three quarters a minute or maybe a minute of spin drift would be about right at 1000y)

Left rifling. It's spin drift.

Yes, this "voodoo" subject comes up again. Keep in mind that the 303 launched at 2400 fps or so, right? I'm just passing on what I read, but it was master shooters doing the writing. I got the clear impression he was passing on his range experience, not armchair theory. If he was wrong his match results at 1000yds would have changed his teaching in a hurry. In rereading it is clearly stated that the bullet drifts 5 MOA left @1000yds with NO wind after a precise zeroing.

Fella on one of the U.S. sniper forums was having issues trying to learn how to use the meter. Very little info. Web site stuff very vague. Kestrel said talk to Horus. Horus said talk to Kestrel....

The Kestrel software ("communicator") does not include functionality to save stored firearm configurations yet (or that I have found how to do). The UI is quite nice and simple. I have yet to really test out the functionality due to family commitments, but will post when I have a chance.

https:// horusvision.wordpress.com talks about the Kestrel as well.

I was looking at a Kestrel 4000 the other day and it stated one of the values it showed was density altitude. That would account for temp, press (altitude etc.), and relative humidity, correct?

I see that it includes a humidity sensor (http://www.kestrelmeters.com/products/kestrel-4000-weather-meter), so yes it is able to calculate density altitude.

"Density altitude" BTW is simply a funny form of units for expressing the air density. Once you have air density (or its equivalent, density altitude), your ballistics program can apply a correction factor to the Ballistic Coefficient and fully compensate for all ballistics effects due to pressure, temperature, humidity and altitude,

Thanks, that's what I thought. I suppose the only reason "density altitude" is sometimes used is because altitude is one of the important parameters for pilots, although air density is simpler for us.

Bringing this back from the dead.

I just ordered a Kestrel 4500, looking forward to trying it out

I also ordered a 4500 with bluetooth. Spent time reading all about the 4500 with Horus Ballistics, but the reviews have not been great, and vendor support seems to be severely lacking, so decided to pass on that version.

Got the yellow one, but was an open box, at a smoking price I couldn't resist. (about half of a new olive/tan)

I am going to try Shooter software with the Bluetooth link. It works on iOS and Android, and am going to load it on my PlayBook, as it will run Android applications.

Will report back in a month or two.

new wind meters from Celestron

Celestron is introducing a pair of wind meters to the market this year. The lower priced unit will give temp. and wind speed, the deluxe model will give temp. wind speed, Alt, Bar, Hygro, windchill, and few other bits of information about $80 and $40 retail. FS

I was contemplating the same windmeter(the horus version). I would prefer this version because I already haul around too much while hunting:
Rangefinder
GPS
Windmeter
Ballistics Calculator
I go hunting to get away from my cell phone, Its the last thing I want to be a requirement when I get out.
If I could get my hands on a windmeter with built-in gps and ballistics calculator, well that would be great. I even looked at the G7 rangefinder/ballistics calculator but it doesn't calculate in MILs only MOA and all of my scopes are on MILs.
I might just get the horus version and hope for the best.

The combo of a kestrel and an FDAC (Field Density Altitude Compensator) can't be beat. Very accurate, small doesn't take up any room and the batteries last forever. ;)

Hey Max.
Don't forget the lack of cell phone service at some shooting events. Get something that works without talking to cell towers.
