Kestrels

I've been "burning the midnight oil" and I think I have a finalist: Kestrel Sportsman Weather Meter with Applied Ballistics with LiNK & Vane Mount

That is exactly the set-up that I bought, then later upgraded to the Elite software package as others here have done in order to have a 5700. The other thing I did was trade my Sig LRF for a Bushnell 1 Mile Elite Conx system. My range finder now talks to my Kestrel via Bluetooth so that when I lase a target in a registered direction I get back a near instantaneous Vertical Correction in mils right in the eyepiece of the range finder. The Kestrel can be up to 100 feet away in weather station mode on an exposed knoll to read the wind at the firing point, and it will stiĺl function as a ballistic computer integrated with the Bushnell LRF thanks to Bluetooth. Pretty cool system, and just the tip of the iceberg of what's to come as tech for PRS further matures.

Was there any cost to update to the Elite software?

Oh, yes -very much so! The cost to ugrade was a couple hundred $$ IIRC. You can pretty much buy the upgrade on-line, but you will also need the Kestrel USB Dongle that they will ship to you in order to do the download from your còmputer to the Kestrel unit. One more thing you have to buy. Anyhow, it is all explained on-line and the actual upgrade is fairly easy to do. Trust me, if I can do it so can you!

Thanks, I've been watching some videos, and I like the weather vane/weather station option/accessory. The Link feature seems to be an advantage as well. I know what I want now.
While it's not cheap, it's a "buy once cry once" for me. Cheers

Well I havent upgraded my weather meter yet, but I have some cash burning a hole in my pocket so Im back looking at up grading again. I didnt really shoot that much this year anyways. :/

Bartok5 Im just wondering if you ran into any problems or anything after/during you upgraded from the Sportsman to the Elite, as thats what Ill probably be doing in the future.

There is a kestrel with Horus on the ee right now for 350 isn't there?

That will do everything you could want for way less money than new. I have this one and it gets you on target way way out there. A buddy has a brand new elite and when we input the same parameters we got a solution within a quarter minute of each other at something like 1500 yards

If you have checked that your scope moves 1/4 per click or whatever it claims, have an accurate muzzle velocity written down for different temps and an accurate set up you'll be very impressed.

Nope, no issues - the upgraded software runs like a top. Nothing to worry about if you follow the online directions. Good luck!

I would argue that the Applied Ballistics Kestrel is a frivolous expenditure.

You can download a ballistics app from Lapua on your cell phone that uses the internet to determine your location and the weather conditions in your area and calibrates that information into your ballistic solution.

The only thing the Lapua App wont do is tell you the wind speed and you can use the cheapest wind meter for that.

In the end you still have to use your noodle to figure the shot angles to wind direction, plus consider topography effect on wind.

After a while you will get to know the wind and when you do you a wind meter it will just confirm what you already probably figured out before you used it.

Get yourself a Dwyer wind meter and you wont need batteries.

I would argue that your bargain solution only works if your phone has an Internet connection. Not all shooting locations fall under the 4g footprint. Then what?

Coolio

Glad the upgrade process went without a hitch.

I dont really want to be using my cell phone out in the elements to much, so Im looking for a more robust solution. I mostly use my dope charts but its good to have more then one option me thinks. :p

thx guys

frivolous for those that are only shooting in fair weather and have access to constant internet everywhere they shoot.

For those of us that shoot in rain, snow, extreme cold or heat, in the middle of nowhere, it makes absolute sense to have a kestrel. I don't trust my phone in field conditions, phones are not the most reliable things. Nor will you always shoot where you have connectivity.

A kestrel has everything in one. Weather station, wind (though there is a lot more to wind than just reading it at your location, but its a starting point), and ballistics solver (if you get the version with one), all integrated into one unit. It's sturdy, has a long battery life, and you get the weather at your actual destination (not from a weather station miles away from you).

Arguably, for the majority of people on this board you can get by without a kestrel. For some of us, it's an essential tool in our shooting kit.

Just one more thing I just thought of.

Im looking at the one with Link and wasnt going to buy the Dongle at this time, but does it come with a cable so I can hook it up to my computer for now and transfer different rifle profiles back and forth?

thx
