I have made contact with a very lucky fellow who found a musket in a house he was tearing down.

To me, it appears to be a Ketland trade musket in attic condition.

What would such a gun be worth in Canada ? Is this the kind of gun that should go to auction in one of the larger auction houses ?




 
Looks as if the barrel has been shortened considerably.
The gun could have significant value.
A large auction house might be an effective way of selling it.
He should make contact with the Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron, Nebraska. Email them photos. The Museum will be able to help him with precise identification.
 
Unfortunately I have no idea what something like that would be worth but thanks for showing it.
What a great find! It would be fantastic to know it's history.
 
I hope your lucky amigo knows how to check if it's loaded, many of the old front stuffers were left with powder and ball in them. I definitely agree that proper identification should be done first even if it ends up at auction. Never rely on an auction house to correctly describe something for you.

A very similar gun, converted to percussion, is currently being offered at americanlongrifles.org @US$600.
 
Wonderful piece! The buttplate is not consistent with British built NW Trade guns so may be American made even though the Ketland & Co. lock is Brit. The frizzen appears to have been refaced so it has seen lots of use. Still a great specimen!
 
There were a variety of "trade" guns made. Some for the Indian trade, some for the trade in general.
There were fur company Indian trade guns which did not have the characteristic flat butt plate and oversized trigger guard of the classic NW gun. The trading companies offered guns in different grades.
What proof marks are on the barrel?
