If anyone in the CGN world is interested in Ketts I happen to know a fellow in Austria who is selling off his petting zoo of three very nice kettenkrads (could build up a fourth from his parts collection). If your SERIOUS about owning one of these uber unique, uber rare vehicles PM me and I will connect you to the seller.

Theres a fella here on CGN who's been in the process of restoring one for a while now.

I think that's the OP hisownself... I was watching that thread when it was active. I watch a lot of WWII footage on Hero's channel and really started to look for the kittens on there... so far I've seen only two in use in real footage and the one prominently displayed in Private Ryan.

Any ball park on cost?

I imagine shipping would be close to $5k
I have a sound idea of what the value of a kettenkrad is but what the seller is asking is totally between him and whoever steps up and takes the plunge. To ship from Europe it would have to come over in a container, no just sticking it in a big box and having UPS drop it off at the door at 2,726lbs.

Combat Dealer had a very interesting episode on last night featuring the Kettenkrad. Well worth the time to watch. Lots of different "models" of the little rascal, an inexperienced buyer could get lucky....or very well burned in a hurry.

Take "Combat Dealer" (and all other "reality" shows for that matter) with a HUGE grain of salt and see it as purely entertainment only. When I was in the UK last year the show was held in nothing but disdain by most in the MV community. Yeah the guy has lots of "toys" but once he starts talking the reality is sucked out of the show.
This Kettenkrad in the USA (I know the seller BTW) is a good and respectable price considering the condition of the kett and what has been done to keep it driveable.

$115,000 US Dollars...

...wow....

^ It is all a question of rarity, originality and location that sets the price.

The host is a bit hard to take most of the time however the iron he has speaks of some knowledge of the material they handle. Some of the peer animosity can probably be attributed to professional jealousy of his collection as well, I see that in gun collecting , car collecting and suspect it happens in all forms of collecting. Usually it comes from someone who can't hold a candle to the person being vilified. More than one spurious antique faker holds animosity to a bonafide collector who can spot the changes.

The pictures you and Klunk supplied really exemplify what was said on the program. With just a cursory look at them I can see differences in all four machines that a novice like me wouldn't know which added or detracted value from them. The two sand colored ones appear to be the same model or from the same factory but the two dark colored ones both are different from each other and different from the sand colored ones. The machines could be from three different factories or just different models with specs for different branches of military.

The one for sale in the USA and the three in Europe are all of the same mid series production, the empty body in Europe is a late 1944 to 45 kettenkrad. The addition of headlights and oddball fender lights are just to get it road legal in Europe and no big show stopper. Only two contractors produced HK101s in wartime German NSU and Stoewer (I am not adding Simca of France to the list) and no doubt numerous sub contractors (Bosch/Mahle/Opel/Notek). All three German services received the same, from the factory, kettenkrad which had a five year production run (not counting the 550 built postwar) and during production the Germans worked at making the kett simpler to turn out by deleting items on it or moving things around (tow hooks in particular) on it.
As for Combat Dealers........meh I can pass on that time vampire. Not saying to not watch it or not, I just have other things to do to kill time.

They are nice.

I wonder how many Kettenkrads took a direct hit from a 75mm Sherman Tank or any other tank for that matter?

its pretty cool, but there are lots of toys i would rather have for that price. that would get you well into a pair of BMPs, or a T-72, you might get into a sherman at that price even

you could buy a pair of t72's(these are around $50,000 USD) for that or a bunch of bmp's(around $20,000) id rather buy t34's though since you can now own them with live armor and main guns without paper work

if I won the 649 the first thing I would buy is a couple T72s (I do love those tanks for some reason), the second would be a HUGE piece of land out west and the third...........well I have not figured that out as of yet as I have never satisfied 1. and 2. (and I never seem to have that winning 649 ticky). A nice little kett takes up next to no space when restored (it does seem to GROW during a restore) and is "moveable" without need of a 18 wheeler to do so AND it runs on regular gas AND as there was only a finate number produced it will hold its value (trust me, German wartime vehicles hold there value), if some Eastern Europe country decides to liquidate its fleet of tanks just watch the "values" plummet.

I don't really care about the value tanks are fun for me if I won it would be a farm here in southern Ontario a t-34(preferably a t-34 85) and a steam traction engine then the big list of cars the problem is with anything things seem to multiply. kettenkrads seem to be rare but not all that rare I have seen a few for sale here and there
