Anyone ever see this happen before?

I recently saw this from a brand new and very nice looking Savage rifle.

By Keyholing I mean the bullets were not stabilizing so that some were passing through the target sideways.

Not sure of the exact model. Bolt action, accutrigger, bull barrel with spiral machining, fancy laminated stock.

Keyholing around 50% of the holes. Worse with premium target ammo.

hmmm... strange. THe BRJ should have a 1:16" twist and 21" barrel and fire any 40gr .22lr ammo just fine. What distance are you shooting at? Is the ammo high velocity? standard? subsonic? Maybe if you're shooting at a significant distance (100+ yards), there just isn't enough velocity/spin to stabilize at that distance. However, I can't see this happening. I have a BSEV, essentially the same rifle in stainless, and have shot subsonic out to 100 without problems, albeit I did have to adjust for elevation. I have also shot high velocity at the same distances (with poorer results) without problems.

Maybe someone else could chime in?

I've seen keyholing ... but that was when I ran some 7.62 through my 7.63 pistol :D

Never seen it with a 22 ... sounds to me like someone was shooting bullets out a smooth bore 22.

The only rimfire i`ve seen keyhole was a Brno1 with a bore that looked like an old chunk of sewer pipe. Try a good bore cleaning and check the crown.

They sold you a bum gun. Assuming it was sold as new and was in a box (i.e. you couldn't inspect the EXACT gun before purchasing), you should be able to get a new one (assuming a significant amount of time hasn't lapsed since you took possession of the gun).

You purchased something but did not get it. It would be like you opening up the box to find that it actually contained a rusty tailpipe. A bad shot/scope would create a wide pattern or misses, not bullets striking the target sideways (unless you're a trick ricochet artist)

If it were me, it would be headed for small claims court, assuming they're local.

I just bought a Savage MKll FV SR with a defective barrel ! it will only shoot a 3 shot group of 8 inches at 50m at best ! it also keyholes with some ammo ,, you can see defects on the lands of the rifling .. What is going on at the Lakefield plant? I tried to take it back to Reliable Gun but they just said im a bad shot or my scope is screwed lol ? well i will never spend another cent in that shop , i was spending at least 2k a year there but screw those arrogant a holes.. Im now trying to deal with Savage customer service , its a nightmare ..

The only keyholing that I have ever seen was with Aguila SSS beyong fifty yards, and it happened with a Remington bolt gun and a reworked 10/22.

If the warranty has not expired, get to talking with the people you got the gun from. After your talk to them, send messages to Savage, e-mail and phone calls. Do not let them rest until they say 'Your new rifle is in the mail.'
