I have an older action that needs refinishing. I want to try it in gunkote flat black. its a bolt action. How will the gunkote hold up on the surface of the bolt? Will using the gunkote provide any advantage over blueing by kind of self lubricating ( black i understand has moly in it) I relize the surface will need to be blasted. I plan on a flat finish whether it gets blued or painted.

Anywhere that there is zero tolerance, the finish will rub off. However, if you apply it right, the metal will still be protected from rusting.
The mark on the barrel portion of this was made by rubbing a car key on it. It discoloured the finish but as you can see, it still protected it. I threw the breech asembly in a bucket of salt water and left it for 2 weeks after "scratching" the barrel.
The 1600 series flat black is the one with the molybdenum.
It is slippier then the 2400 series flat black but in my experience doesn't replace a good thin coat of oil.

depending on how tight the bolt fits you may show a few small wear marks. however if you do all the pretreatment, even if the colour wears a bit there should be no rust. i did an experiment with a pair of M98 builds. One the 308 i did not bake the bolt, on the 30-06 i did bake after the colour application. it has worn very well where as the one that did not bake, any chance of contact and the colour has worn. both had the pretreatment and both guns are going into their 4th season - no rust and other than wiping dry after deer hunting no maintenance.
