Kid vs the 45-70 guide gun

I shot a 30-30 when I was 8, and I don't flinch. That's like saying a kid who starts boxing at age 11 will develop a fear of being hit. It actually works the other way around, unless, of course, someone forced him to do it. Way to go kid!

You think???

He did very well.
Eye'll bet after he gets a few more pounds on him, he'll tackle
that again with a big smile on his face.
I remember shooting my 8X57 Brno 21H for the first time in about
that age.
Ouch.
Kept it up as the ole man was watching.
My older sister was there as well and she got a go at it.
Made an off mark retort about shooting it.
Dad's reply, "well you can stay at home in the kitchen with your mom!"
You can bet I didn't hesitate to shoot that old rifle and shot pretty well with
it too.
Sits in the back of the gun cabinet as I don't like the recoil to this day.
Had it out a couple of years ago to fire a few and said some things
maybe I shouldn't have.
Hay Rembo, that kid done you proud.......................

I would say he was surprised and hurt by the recoil. Thumb up was just for the audience, but look beyond the forced smile.

Smile looked genuine....:)

Recoil pad.....;)....I put one on anything larger than the .303.....:D

Are you comparing a 30-30 to a 45/70?

"Are you comparing a 30-30 to a 45/70?"

No. Then again, I was a lot smaller than that kid. I will admit, some kids are turned off when they're thrown in over their heads. I've simply learned to live with the reality that not every kid will be a shooter, fighter, or athlete. I'm guessing that kid will rise to the challenge. I know a fighter when I see one.

How de we all know this kid is a new shooter? Jeez, before you decapitate the OP, find out the facts.

Im sure most of us were shooting "large bore" guns (.30+) when we were his age, and we turned out fine.

A lot of hub-bub over nothing...

One of my most vivid memories as a child is shooting a 12ga. Wingmaster at an old oil can for the first time. My dad and my grandfather were telling me, "Make sure you hold it tight against your shoulder!"... but it was still "Oommph... ouch", as it is for everyone. My brother (year older), same thing.

Within a year we were hunting ducks with the same gun. I wouldn't trade those memories for anything.

Kids are tough and resilient. Probably took him all of... 5 minutes? ... maybe less... before wanting to try it again. Shooting that 45-70 at that age and having a video of it.... 20 years from now he won't trade those memories for anything.

Amen brother, Amen. ;)

My son, Jeff, started big game hunting with a 25-35 at age 10. At 13 he was amazing the guys at our club by knocking down silhouettes with a Ruger Model 77 in 375 Chatfield-Taylor.

I have a suspicion Rembo's nephew has sent quite a few rounds downrange before firing this gun. Not only because of the way he controlled the recoil, but because I know Rick, as well. :)

i highly doubt that its his first time out shooting, if it was he would have dropped the gun.

i havent even shot a 45/70 props to the kid for being up for it

I think he did very well. Brings back good memories of shooting boomers, like a .303 with the brass but pad (now that hurt) and the 20 gauge cooey single shot. Good thing that marlin has a nice recoil pad.

i think he'll make out fine ;)

you should buy him his own though if he's gonna shoot the big stuff :D

The kid is not new to shooting at all...he started with 22's at about 5 or 6 yrs old. His Dad has a few guns but the largest rifle he has is a heavy 700 in 223,...the boys(he has 3) get bored with it fast so he borrows a few from me once in a while...they shot a 22-250, a 308 and a 44 Mag Marlin before they tried the 45-70.
I think I'll find them a cheap starter rifle in something with more pop than the 223 ,...but a bit less than the 45-70:).....30-30 might be just right,..my boys started thier centerfire adventures with a 30-30 and a 44Mag Marlin at 7 or 8 yrs old....

In general, I've noticed that the lighter a person is, the less the recoil hurts, moving the whole person back instead. A heavier person like myself, has a lot of inertia, so the muscle/bone structure does most of the giving.

Sounds like mixed feeling on this. If you replay the video and pause it right away, you can see the impact on his shoulder and his eyes shut tighter than a safe. I'll bet he'll remember that shot for the rest of his life.

Give the kid a pat on the back though, he showed his ol'man that he can control the big gun. Well done kid!!!!

I hope he had safety contact lenses in, cause dad forgot to give him some glasses.

peace...

Lighter loads

It was good to see that he gave it a try and toughed it out. I would think that it was a little more than he was expecting.

I load 405 grn Bullet Barn cast loads over 35 grns of 4198 and the velocity is 1450 fps. I shoot the exact same rifle.

This load is nice to shoot and the recoil is like that of a 12 gauge.

They are fun guns to shoot and with a little lighter load the younger shooters can shoot it all day.
