you have been factually correct yes. Every hunter should be concerned about a poorly placed shot.

have you provided any factual knowledge pertaining to the original direction of the thread absolutly not.

is your factual knowledge usefull in any way.. also no

I joined this form to gain knowledge because of MY lack of knowledge not to listen to grumpy people whine about hunting ehtics.

if you have some usefull knowledge you would like to pass on to someone new im happy to learn.

Yeah, be a ####, that'll make us want to help...

My kids all started with a 22lr, and I've got a 243win for them to move up to when the time is right. My 243 is a Henry Single Shot youth, they're fully ambidextrous, a perfect feature when half the family shoots left.

The first gun I plan on getting is a Henry lever .22lr just to learn the basics myself before getting a more powerful gun. guess the kids will do the same

You need more guidance than this forum can give or your likely to listen too.

Your already shopping for a knife for field dressing when you should be concerned with other things first, like learning the hunting rules and regs of the province your in so your in compliance with caliber and times and locations.
Learning safe gun handling in the field, crossing fences safely, climbing into a tree stand safely, learning how to use a safety harness, learn some basic first aid, learn some navigation skills, learn about deer movements, patterns, the rut etc etc.

You say I'm whining about ethics ???? Being am ethical hunter is an important part of hunting.

You should respect the game animal enough to dedicate an incredible amount if time to learn and practice efficient accurate shots, to take shots within your abilities.

It's an extremely long list that I fail to see how you'll be prepared in a short approx 10 weeks when the season begins.

My advice would be to read many threads and comments, then find a poster that provides good honest and respectful advice and private message that poster with your questions and avoid starting a thread to find the answers you seek. Threads here almost always spiral into insults and personal attacks.

I fail to see where she asked you to be a t*wat and make assumptions about whether or not she had anyone else available to help mentor. Glad to see that you went full douchebag gatekeeper on someone who is excited to learn a new life skill.

Heaven forbid a person get excited about something and start to prepare by asking about knives, after all, we all know that knives have no outside use other than specifically opening up a body cavity. How DARE she buy a knife before learning how to use a safety harness for a treestand?!?!? She probably doesn’t even OWN a treestand yet, never mind if she is ever going to use it, when she has kids in tow.

Reading that, she was awfully polite in her responses to you being a jackass right off the bat.

LOL, a full on douchebag white knight response , being excited is great and important, understanding it's not a simple endeavor like learning badminton is also important.
I guess just pointing this person towards some hunting land with some guns and say have at er, is another way to go.

The knife thread was specifically about field dressing, so you went full on tw.at white knight protector on that count.

You've not offered any guidance in your hissy fit Karen styled unhinged rant.

How about you make a checklist of what the OP needs to do to ensure safety and success.

I guess it's easier to rage post than offer advice.

Would you like to speak to the manager ?

LMFAO, half your posts are Thread Police rants like the above, and the other half show you should be asking questions and taking notes, not giving “advice”.

I'm smart enough to know to ask.

You spent your Sunday stalking my posts, I guess your a fan, pm me your address and I'll send an autograph

good evening.

two of my kids have expressed an interest in hunting, looking for opinions on a started rifle for them based on real world knowledge.
they are 13 and 9 they have never shot anything before. would a .22 be to small for dear? something better with little to no recoil?
If you decided to go with a 223, loads like 77gr Tipped Matchking and 80gr ELD are quite well proven on deer. They actually do more damage than something like a 30-30 with a slow velocity and low fragmentation.

7.62x39, 6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC, all great rifles that are light and provide good effect for mild recoil.

Does that 223 recipe leave large amount if unusable meat ?

Our Deer group has one guy that uses 180 gr Federal Power Shok and it leaves a large amount of wasted meat.

His theory is bigger is better and the game will tip over regardless of shot placement.

To the OP, here is a perfect example of how NOT to hunt. People that think that way have no ethical business in the bush. A great example showing that just because someone has been hunting for a long time does NOT mean that they are qualified to give advice.

That person is not giving advice to anyone.

I merely used him as an example to describe meat waste from the caliber and ammo combo in relation to the post indicating that a 223 round will do more damage than a 30-30.

Our group nember uses tge incredibly popular 30-06 round, his choice of loads could however be improved.

It's his one and only gun and uses it and the same box of Power Shoks for Bear, Deer and Moose.

Whatever caliber you decide for when you go deer hunting next year, I suggest getting a nice .22 for them to learn to shoot with - get one similar in action to the deer rifle. Encourage them to shoot hundreds, if not thousand of rounds so that running the bolt, using the scope, and safety are second nature. A good way to learn all this with mentorship is attend rimfire (.22) PRS matches in your area that are cheap, verrrrrry friendly, and I couldn't think of a better way to learn shooting.

Hey FCD, sorry for not replying to this sooner.

Pictures are the best way to show what it does...to me, yeah I like less meat damage actually. But its a trade off for lethality. Not too bad when you don't hit them in the shoulder bones (or if you do, its not going as fast). But it can be nasty. Lots of photographic evidence here
