Howdy rimfire shooters,
Anyone own a Kimber Hunter/Silhouette in 22lr? and how do they shoot?
I know the factory spec/.s them at groups of .40" @50yds for groups, but generally are owners happy w. them? And what is one in as new condition worth? I've go a line on one, but have not shot one before. Would liem to find out before I move on it; nedd to know asap. Thanks for your help. :)

I pondered a Hunter a year or so ago. Dollar for dollar, the CZ 452 is every bit the rifle but half the price. The magazines seem gimiky for a rifle of that quality, and the level of quality didn't match the price.

I bought a Kimber SVT. Guaranteed .40 at 50 yards. Comes with a test target. The trigger is excellent, the barrel is free floated and the action is bedded. Plus unlike the CZ, they have a nice Winchester model 70 style safety. The magazines I have seem pretty decent. Plus they sit flush with the rifle unlike the CZ.

I agree it's not twice the rifle as the CZ, and you do run into the laws of diminishing returns. However they are definately a step up from the CZ and are a very nice rifle.

Given the choice between a CZ and a kimber. I'd take the Kimber anyday. Plus you can always get a CZ later if you want. That's not the case with the Kimber.

I hate to break it to you guys, but if you want a Kimber 22, look around for a used one. Kimber has stopped making 22's. They did this to concentrate on their centerfire rifles.

Kimber HS

I know they stopped making them. There are still a few NIB ones at a couple of dealers, but no HS's. ( saw your neat BSA martini, Sand) But it is hard trying to find out much about this last bunch of 22's. I've left threads across the border too, with limited success.
Thanks for your comments Epoxy! Had any proiblems w. the action failing to eject properly? I like the mini mauser look too. I've got a SVT KoO that I wouldn't part with. I was thinking the HS would make a nice compliment to it.

We have superb taste in firearms. :) Love those Coopers. The Jackson Squirrels and LVT are fine looking arms. Now what to part with to get one! :(

Don't have a kimber but have sold a few and pretty much every one has had feeding and extraction issues. Have just sent one silouette in for the 3rd time, the owner is understandably pissed. Also no authorised repair facilities in canada that I am aware of. IMHO buy a cooper if you want to spend the $.

Cooper is nice. However I thought the cost was significantly more.

45 Auto. Unfortunately I'm still waiting for my scope to arrive. I ordered a Leupold 6.5-20x EFR for this rifle. The wrong scope was sent (Regular VXIII not EFR).
I've done the usual clean it up, fondle the rifle etc. I have dry fired it using a .22 empty casing. But I haven't done any feeding/extracting yet. I'll let you know as soon as I get a chance to go shoot this rifle.

The initial impressions are excellent. But the proof is in the pudding.

Epoxy7, appreciate your comments. Yes, please let me know how it shoots live. I've heard there have been extraction and feeding problems as
Cummins4x4 mentions. That's what worries me. The design makes for great feeding. According to waht I've read, the cartridge is picked up and centered exactly in the middle of the chanmber, and you can feed, extract, and not see any marks on the lead bullet. no nicks as you can get w. some others. that is why I hand feed all my 22's , even my Annie , when I am serious about shooting tight groups in comp. No auth. repair centers in Canada, even though there are Kimber centerfires? Talk to you later.

I'll let you know how it shoots as soon as I get it up and running.
I went into the store today and they have my scope. So I'm taking the rifle in to get the scope mounted (Better than me doing a crummy job :D).

Well I couldn't resist. So I went shooting today even though it was windy.

Extracting the round was very good. However you have to be carefull and use just the right amount of pull on the bolt for a perfect extraction. I did a few too slow and the empty case ended up back in the breach. The short throw of the bolt also took some getting use to :D. I had one magazine that was perfect. The second magazine that I took with me had a manufacturing flaw. The last round had difficulty feeding due to this.

I was given a piece of plastic from a member of Rimfire Central that converts the magzine to a single shot. So that magzine is now a single shot. I have a third magazine that looks to be ok. I'll take it with me next time.

As for the rifle. I didn't shoot for groups due to the wind. But... interestingly enough I was able to make three shots with almost no wind. I was using the smallbore targets with the middle being the 10 point shot. I decided to take one shot on the remaining bullseyes. I was shooting at 30 yards with a sandbag front and bean bag rear. The one shot I pulled just slightly. It was still in the 10 mark. The other two with no wind and me not screwing up were right on the bullseye. There was equal space around the bullet while still being within the 10 mark. Umm Wow. I can't wait to shoot this rifle inside and with no wind to test out it's true accuracy.

The short of this. Yes there are feeding problems. They are due to the magazines. If you get a bad one (I have one bad one out of 3) then you may have an issue.

By the way shooting the heads of Dandelions at 50 yards is fun

Hey Epoxy7,
I enjoyed reading your field test. :) I am not too concerned if the extracted cases drop back into the breach as long as they are extracted from the chamber. I've heard issues w. both and I tend to think that if a particular rifle works fine from the beginning, then it will be ok. I get cases dropping back into the breach from my Annies as well. Usually the cases fly up and hit the scope and fall back in. Not usually a problem standing, since I can tilt the rifle, but a pain if you are all set up in a good benched position and have to mess around.

You've just got to try some more group shots at 50yds outdoors. It can be fun w. the wind. All part of the game. Dandylions, eh. Hope you've got a 'permit' to hunt them ;). Sounds like fun. We have a 'fly' target that I've designed, and we shoot the flies at 50 and 100 yds for some of our fun shoots. One of our members, Sandymac went after the real deal during one of our shoots....stupid fly sitting in the sighter box! :D

I think I am going to get the seller to do a few range tests to see how the feeding/extraction is working; I think the rifle has been idle a few years.. and then a 'definite maybe' I'll get the HS. Keep us posted on your other range endeavours. I will post some results if I get the rifle and go to the range. Thanks again.

Hey 45 Auto, glad to see someone is reading it :D

Well I went to the range again today. Light breeze not bad at all.
I shot a couple of groups which I thought were a bit disapointing. :(

I ended up getting a bit of oil on the bolt and as it was extracting I had the brass casing stick. I look at this and happened to notice that the bolt was actually scratching the tip of the next bullet in the magazine. After removing the empty cartridge and the extra oil (Which stopped subsequent emtpy cases from sticking) I took a very close look. Sure enough the tips of the bullets were being deformed when the bolt was brought back to eject the shell casing.

So I started using the single shot magazine only. This took care of the problem. The accuracy level went up to what I was expecting. I ran out of time for 5 shot groups. I hope to try some groupings next week.

Failure to eject. I haven't had any problems with that at all, I have the amount of force just right for a good ejection. Just make sure there isn't any oil on the bolt face and it's very good.

Feed issues. Only the last round in the one faulty magazine. However as I've pointed out for accuracy shooting do not use the magazine. It damages the bullet.

Hey Epoxy7. We're here to keep them entertained.
Spoke w. the seller again. He is going to check out the feeding and extraction, but never had any problems before, so it looks promising. I have a 3x9 Leupold that would fit quite nicely. Will know soon.

SandRoad was saying that you have to look for used ones; I noticed Bashaw Sports has two new ones in stock: Hunter and Classic. If anyone is looking for a brand new one. I'm still after the silhouette model.

We had a good Br shoot at 50yds yesterday even though it was a bit windy. Our range has some tricky wind. Just ask Sandymac! ;) He used the UK BR target w. 250x25 possible score. I was lucky to get average 214 for three targets; highest of 220. Those tens are really small!

Talk to you later after you next field test/update. :)
