I recently set out to build up a nice hunting rig for long days on foot hunting Whitetail deer on Ontario, and future trips to Anticosti and out west. I wanted to explore the world of an ultralight rifle. It didn't take long to see that this market is mostly dominated by Kimber so I started reading. "Kimber Roulette" was a term thrown around quite a bit as apparently some guys have not been able to get their Kimbers to group. Yet more research showed me that this was possibly the result of guys not knowing how to shoot such a light gun, or newbies with cash to burn who bought "the best gun" expecting the gun to shoot cloverleafs out of the box. Regardless, I called Omer at Precision Optics and we chatted about the Kimbers, and he re-assured me that they haven't had any Kimbers that they couldn't get to shoot with the right choice of ammo. So I went ahead and ordered a Kimber Adirondack, with muzzle brake in 6.5 creedmoor. Service from Omer and Precision Optics was top notch, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again. Plus their scope prices are some of the best around.

Firstly, this gun is light, freakishly light. My wife calls it a baby gun compared to others like my Sako A7 30-06, Bergara or Tikkas. The fit and finish is outstanding. I read about a "pre-flight" checklist that some guys do to these guns, which includes modifying the mag well, shortening the front scope mounting screw, bedding the action... etc etc. My rifle didn't need any of these mods. All came from the factory in perfect condition. The only modification I made to it was the addition of a fluted Ti bolt handle, purely cosmetic and weight savings. I checked the torque on the action bolts, good to go.

I topped the rifle with a Swarovski Z3 3-10x42 in Talley Med rings. Total package came to 5.8lbs scoped. I also tested the Z5 3.5-18x44 and the Leupold VX3i 3-10x40 CDS. The Z3 was the clearest and sharpest to my eye with the easiest eye box to get behind and the weight was perfect. I also like the simplicity and size of the Z3, capped turrets, nothing to bump out of adjustment or catch on a pack.

At the range, the gun didn't disappoint. I did the usual break-in procedure, starting with cheap ammo just to break it in. Even with cheap ammo I could see this gun was a shooter, stacking the cheap ammo in nice clusters. Once broken in, I switched to Hornady Whitetail Hunter 129gr and Hornady Precision Hunter ELD-X 143gn. The Whitetails grouped nice, well under 2" without much effort, but the Precision Hunter was phenomenal. Easily groups under an inch with some as low as .5" and I'm not a great shooter.

To say I'm happy is an understatement. From the purchase process with Omer at Precision Optics to the gun itself and ultimately the performance at the range, I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

Wow - 5.8lb scoped! Looks like a beauty of a rig.

Unrelated question - I think you have your Bergara listed on the EE. How have you liked that gun? I was thinking about picking up a Woodsman.

Good report sir. I once handled a Kimber of some sort at Cabelas and your comment - freakishly light also came to my mind. Should make for a nice carrying rifle

The Bergara is fantastic, they shoot, as they should given Bergara's stellar reputation as a barrel maker. The action is "Tikka smooth" and the stock is the nicest plastic stock I've encountered. I think that as these guns get more mainstream, prices will go up, right now they are way underpriced for what they are. Only selling it to pay for the Kimber lol. In fact it sold today.

Exactly what I was hoping to hear! Thanks!

A nice choice in rifle, scope and cartridge, nice to hear everything worked out. Kimber's are amazingly accurate for such a light rifle, at least in my experience anyway. I have a Sworo Z3 mounted on my mountain ascent and I'm happy with it. Congrats on your new rifle.

Great review on a new Kimber, Thanks for sharing, Omer at Precision Optics is top notch, great service and prices, not to mention a hell of a nice guy.

I tend to see more negative reports than positive, I bought a Kimber Montana 6.5cm last January and its shot everything from 3/4". to 1 1/4"

Had it bedded and the trigger lightened and wow it was amazing, .25" groups with Hornady 120 gr ELDM, 143gr ELDX,

Anyone that has a roach Kimber Montana that won't shoot Ill take it.....send me a PM please ;)

what would be the average of 5 three shot groups?

I never shot that much at one sitting but every time at the range it shot that well with either factory ammo.

A fellow I know had two new Kimber’s at the range a cpl days back, a 280AI Montana and a 7mm-08 Adirondack, nothing done to them both with factory ammo shot just under 1/2” MOA
I’ll ask if I can post his targets up.

If I could figure out how to do the picture thing I would, my last group with my Kimber Mountain Ascent went into one ragged hole. It's usually less than moa and often .5" for 3 shots. That's straight out of the box.

I just brought home one in 30/06 and I do like it. Three shot group show two basically in the same hole with the third out an inch after I pulled it. Def have to let it cool between groups but wow....what a nice carrying set up. Guess I lucked out :)

Put a little pressure on the barrel just ahead of the scope, allow the barrel to cool for few min after the 2nd shot and I would bet the group will tighten up.

I’ve still got three kimbers. Montana’s in 30-06 and .338 win and a .243 classic select grade. All three have shot cloverleaf 3 shot groups although the .338 is usually around three quarter to an inch groups. I’ll wear the blame for that, the .338 has a lot of recoil and I’ve got to be on my game to get cloverleafs with it. They make a great rifle and they’re a joy to carry, if anyone had a “dud” 84m I would love to buy it. I’ve got a .338 federal barrel that needs an action.

I will just say that I agree that Kimbers are awesome. I just got one, the Mountain Ascent in 6.5 CM and the first time at the range it shot great. Didn't have time to do any long range stuff and it was windy, but really looking forward to reaching out with it to see what it can do at 400 yds.
