I'm still trying to decide on a .375 to purchase for the comming fall. Thought to myself that Kimber must make something nice and went looking at their website. I'm curious if anyone here has handled one? The price seems awfully steep, but I'm not against paying for something of quality. I wouldn't have any quelms about paying $1500 for a Montana in a 375H&H

Couldn't something be custom built for about the same price? I know that Kimber is already considered semi-custom built. But are you able to call them up and say you want a LOP of 15 1/4" with a 3/4" drop?

Of course I'm still thinking about the Ruger Alaskan, but the only thing I wonder about with that is why the Alaskan has a 20" barrel while the African comes with a 23" You'd think that a 375 Ruger would want the same length of barrel for the same cartridge right?

You could get a nice rifle built for yourself for that price. Buy a Mdl 70 long action (liek the one I have for sale);) And buy a stock and barrel and get it put together for you. Unless the Caprivi is a very special rifle, I'd go custom.

The reason the Alaskan has a shorter barrel than the African, is the same as thier name implies;)

Africa you usually have more open country, Alaska it can get thick. A 20" barrel is ideal for quick handling in tighter cover. Velocity loss will not be too much, but noise woudl increase, I suspect.

I own a Kimber 84m in 308, it's a nicve rifle but in no way is it a rifle I would have paid the new price for. The Caprivi must be good for that kind of money, mine is OK, but not terribly accurate.
 
I thought that Dakotas started at around 10K? They are definately show pieces, especially when you see the doubles selling for 35K

I think the Ruger will be my likely choice. I'd prefer to have a synthetic stock on something I intend to use quite a bit. Otherwise I'd be looking at the CZ550. My main thought though is to have something that I can confidently shoot out to 300yrds with and be easy handling enough to deal with close encounters of the large furry land carnivore types.

What Clarke said!! You could get a VERY nice custom gun for alot less then $3200 plus tax. :eek:

Buy and action and go from there.

for $3500 CDN, a decent action, a properly made, oil finished walnut stock, express sights, ebony forend tip, 24 LPI checkering ........

I'd forgo the walnut and go a more utilitarion approach with a McMillan.

I was in Prince George a couple of weeks ago and the sporting goods store downtown had a beautiful Ruger in 375 H&H for around $1900.

I think for $3200 I would have Corlane in Dawson Creek make something up for me and get exactly what I wanted. Those folks do very nice work.

You don't spend $3500 on a 'utilitarian' rifle :D The Sevens 200 is 'utilitarian' and it's <$400

Plus, you spend a hell of a lot more time looking at a rifle like that than using it

They're still waiting to sell one so they can afford to put it on their web site!:D

If you have that much to spend on any rifle then I doubt it's a big deal.:bangHead:
 
Get what tickles yer 'nads and to hell with what any one else thinks. I have a 602 in 375 that cost me $400 and it puts 3 -300 gr rn in less than 1/2" and I look great carrying it.
