Does anyone know if the Kimber sporterized M96s are a good gun, i know the m96 is but did kimber do a good job sporterizing them or do they feel like a POS. How accurate are they and would this gun make a good long range gun like up to a 1000 yards as well as a good deer gun? I saw one for sale and the guy claimed it shot 4 3/4 inch groups at 600 yards, is this likely? He also said with crappy ammo all 4 bullets touched at 300 yards. Any help would be great as I am not knowledgeable about these guns. Also a general price range would be great.

Thanks, Dave

This is a Kimber of America, these were produced after the Kimber of Oregon, though they were still made there. After this came Kimber in Yonkers, NY.
They sporterized M96's(Swede's) and M98's(VZ24).
I have a 30-06 sporter on a VZ24. The gun shoots very well, the bbl is pretty heavy for a 30-06 though. Stock is a Ramline, so cheap. I swapped a Timney in for a trigger.

They usually sell for about $350-$400 in the US. Don't be fooled by the Kimber moniker, they're not the same quality as the first or current models. Definitely not a high grade target rifle. I wouldn't pay more than $450-$500 and that's if it's mint.

They'll make a decent hunting rifle, but they are not 1000 yard target rifles, nor are they generally capable of sub MOA 600 yard shots/bullets touching at 300 yards. Maybe with extensive custom work, but from the factory, probably not. If you want one to go with your Swedish Mauser, then go for it.
