Hi, wondering if anyone has done, or knows someone who has...retrofitted a box magazine to a Kimber Montana 84L, ( in .280AI )...?? I have been carrying the gun for a couple of seasons now and it is perfect for me with the exception of the blind mag loading 'feature'. I hadn't had a problem previously but this fall I hunted with my new Polaris WV850 and so had to have the gun cased while driving.

Get off, load the gun at my leisure and start hunting was the plan. Except this fall a nice 11pt buck was standing in the road ahead...and my haste to get one in the chamber, and consequently in him, resulted in my fumbling the first attempt to chamber a round, and of course the first attempt was the only attempt. He didn't wait for a cursing, frustrated hunter to get his sh_t together, he simply walked off into the bush, laughing all the way I'm sure.

Before I start trying to find a smith who could attempt such a mod I was wondering if anyone might have 'gone before' me...?

Cheers,
Jim

I would think butchering a montana would be a bad idea...I doubt many have been done. Why not sell it and pick up another lightweight that has a mag or is in a platform that has aftermarket support.

I've read online that Kimber said it's a no go as it would comprise the structural integrity of the stock. The specific model was a Talkeetna which I think is the same design as the Montana save fore the caliber. Sorry I cant recall where I read this specifically or I'd link it. In either case I double check with the Kimber helpline before attempting this.

I hear that - I hunt 2km's from home. Load up in the morning; hunt until 10; unload, go home; return at around 3 and load up again; hunt until dark; unload, go home - each and every time. I have better rifles to hunt with than my Browning BAR, but I end up taking it for this reason. Sorry I don't have advice for your original question.

Thanks for the replies...I kind of suspected the points made above, i.e. structural integrity, butcher job, etc...but wanted to ask the question. This forum is a wonderful source of information, appreciate the input.

I enjoy the gun for many reasons, the 'loading/unloading' is the only detraction I could name, and is not a reason to sell the gun, but in my opinion a good reason to look for another solution...buy another gun, one with a clip.

So, now, anyone want to suggest a mate for the Montana, one with a clip perhaps in a 7mm-08ish caliber?

Jim

Tikka T3 light stainless or laminated stainless if you don't like the Tupperware.

My favourite wolf rifle is an M14 for the same reasons. Not the best of anything but a box mag is a blessing for some short, fleeting opportunities when around vehicles / boats / ATVs where you can't have the loaded mag in the gun. I bought a couple scout Rugers for the same idea, the lightest weighs 6 1/4lbs, with a factory detachable mag.
