Kimber Montana vs tikka t3

For what its worth, I picked up a new Forbes ss bbl in 30-06.
Nice rifle. Trigger at 3.5 lbs. Put a 6x36 Leupold LR Duplex on it and made up some moderate 3031 loads under 130 gr Hornadys I had laying around in order to break in the bbl.

After shooting, cleaning, shooting, cleaning at 50 yds - I ended up with a nice ragged hole with about 35 rounds through it.

Looking down range, there at the 500m berm there stood one last ram still standing. I put the lower picket of the LR reticle of the scope on its back and squeezed and thwang..., down it fell. The rifle really became mine at that point in time.

I like this rifle.

No splinters from the stock, nicely bedded and fine safety. Only real complaint was that the receiver coating tended to cause a minor issue in the scope screw holes when I was mounting the bases.

With scope and butler creeks - 6 pounds 5 oz.

Time to work up 180 gr loads - likely partition and accubonds..

I'm glad it's worked out well for you.

I really looked forward to having the experience you did, but it was not to be.

I fired a few rounds through the 300 win Mag montana. Shoots acceptably with the 3 factory rounds I had laying around. What really surprised me was the recoil. It has less felt recoil than my 270 win. So far very impressed, nicely built rifle that can be used for everything, handles great, points like a good shotgun. When I free up some more funds I will pick up a little brother to this in 25-06.

By all accounts the 24B is good - it seems to be the 20B that is causing headaches.

The Kimber's recoil is funny. On the bigger calibers it is blindingly fast, straight back and yet lacks momentum. Its like someone wound up and threw a bag of potato chips at you.

I just might have to try one of them. Wish they made one in Whelen. What are the bigger calibers you've got Dogleg. I want something like my Winchester 70 but with a nicer trigger. I love my Coopers but can only afford the two right now given their price.

I've always worried about recoil in the first few rifles I picked up; wanting to not develop a flinch. Have a FN Winchester 70 FW in 30-06 and a Cooper 280AI. I can shoot both all day without worry of recoil. Maybe I'm just not recoil shy or the rifles just fit me really well. Won't know till I try. I was hoping to add something like a 35 Whelen or the likes as a moose rifle and maybe to take over to Africa some day for larger plains game. Most of all just to stare at and enjoy ;-). Had been thinking of a 9.3x62 but now wondering if I should get a more common caliber for this one as I plan to fly it rather than drive as with the 280AI and who knows, ammo may go missing sometime.

Any thoughts on what caliber in Kimber might fit the bill; similar to a Whelen or 9.3x62

I have a Win Featherweight in 30-06 also, and to me the 300 win in the Kimber has less felt recoil. If I were you I would give some serious thought to the 300 win mag, or even the 338 win mag. Better trajectory than the 9.3 or whelen and they have similar energy, perhaps better at extended ranges. I had whiplash a few years ago from being rear ended and recoil had started to bother me more and more. As I have fired probably 80 or more different rifles I am finally starting to figure out what fits and points the best, and what the felt recoil does to my body. I used to fire off whatever I wanted and it didn't bother me, 458 win mag, 378 wby etc. Now its all about fit, comfort and if I have a headache for 3 days after shooting I don't want to go there.

I had a savage 116 in 338 win and my montana in the same cal. has less felt recoil. My 30-06, a couple of 7 RM's, a 300 bee and a 300 win have more felt recoil due to their stocks. Kimber has the best stock design for me, it just feels right.

The biggest Kimber that I have is a .338 Win Mag. Don't get me wrong, you won't have ask anyone whether went off but it doesn't plow into your shoulder and want to keep going either. I haven't used it as much as many of my other rifles, but did get a grizzly and moose, some deer and I'm not sure how many coyotes with it.

My lightest Kimber is a Montana in .270 WSM. It starts out fast and stops just as fast. Its like it took a little jab with no follow-through and gave up.

So I did it, I got the Montana, but I decided on a different caliber. While at my local gun store I noticed a Montana in 280 AI, so I bought it. I also bought a box of nosler ammo loaded with 160 grain partitions. I sighted the rifle in yesterday and my largest 3 shot group measured 5/8 of an inch from center to center. Couldn't be happier with it. Thanks to everyone who talked me into the Montana.

Nice choice!
