Kimber Mountain Ascent .... what would you do differently ?

Before you pull the trigger on one, check out the prices at River Sportsman in Campbell River BC. I got mine there and it was the best price I could find at that time. I wouldn't change a thing with it, I don't mind the paint or the blind mag. My rifle is very accurate and I love Kimber triggers.

Thanks for the River Sportsman tip, I'll do that.

The more I research the KMA the more I think it doesn't need to be changed. Appreciate your opinion.

I've never really understood why people take issue with a blind mag on a mountain rifle. If it saves an ounce it is preferable to a floorplate or a dm. Who cares if loading/unloading take 5 extra seconds when you load/unload once a day?
 
I have a Montana 280 that I dropped into a Mtn Ascent optifade stock and robbed the 1oz lighter trigger guard off the MA. I wouldn't change a thing

Not a huge fan of the short fluted MA barrel, and the bolt skeletonizing doesn;t add up to much weight savings.

It's a 84L Montana I picked up with 8 rounds through it, with six boxes of Nosler ammo, for a mere $1000. Dropped it in a Optifade Mtn Ascent stock and trigger guard

Ah.... that explains why the bolt & handle are not fluted.
 
Anyone stumble across some appropriate iron sights to add to a Kimber Mountian Ascent or Montana?
 
I was aiming at one of these for a while and still not completely of the idea of getting it.
Sako carbonlight change my mind beside it has a magazine.
Blind magazine as someone said is really not a game changer if you use this gun on mountain hunts where every ounce becomes pound after hours of climbing and walking.
Muzzle brake is not my favourite because of loudness but again that can be solved easy either with thread cap or recrown if really dont like it.
I personally would not change a thing on this rifle. Fits me fine but only thing scares me into buying it is poor accuracy review.
Looks like it is what you end it up with. Guy that had it in .280AI swears it is accurate like no other, someone here says it as well but numerous US forums with countless bad accuracy experiences turned me off.
Beside reviews,Kimber doesnt do much to help it in matter where someone send rifle back or to improve anything.
Reason for my shift toward Sako Carbon was just this and after owning few Sako and Tikka rifles each from .223 to 300WSM i never end up with unaccurate or heard from any of my friends that someone had problem with them.
Dollar for dollar they are both great rifles and wish i am wrong but Kimber is 65-35 that is not accurate as mountain rifle should be.
Maybe great Elk rifle for mountain trek and shooting in some kind of treed area where shots are limited to under 200yrd but honestly i am afraid to invest so much money and end up with $2500-3000 inaccurate rifle.
Beside that worry KMA is great looking and feel rifle for any hunt...

Is this a '280' or a 280 AI?
 
Always loved the look of them.
I am one of the guys that does like the pattern lol.
Having said that no drop plate is a no go for me. and the price is not much better.
I have a 280 rem weatherby ultra lightweight 5 3/4 pounds plenty light enough for me.
the sub moa helps nice as well.
but each to their own! hope you have saved up enough to have a new rifle by now :cheers:

Do you have an accurate scale you could weigh the Weatherby on? Website says 5 3/4 pounds but sometimes it's less or more. My Rem Mountain SS is lighter than factory spec.
 
I will try a bit later and see if I can get a good reading! I did have a rifle fish scale type of thing but im not sure how accurate that is either.
rem mountain is very close as well. Great rifle for sure.
 
in aus they are fetching high rrp... an 2nd handy are up there too.. looking at $3k+ for a brand new KMA, 2nd hand around $2800.

I really wanna get one but I would need to sell 3 of my current lot... cant bring myself to it just yet. when prices drop an a few used 2nd handys come up il grab one.. in the meantime a friend in Arizona is looking in the gun auctions over there for one.
