I have a friend who is just getting into shooting with his son. They want to buy a .22lr semi-auto.
If they buy the Kimber Rimfire can they use the frame later with a .45acp slide?

I don't think so. I think the .45 flame was a steel flame and the rimfire has a aluminum flame.

I think the CDPII family and other kimber .45s use an aluminum frame too. You should really ask this question on 1911-forum.com in the kimber section. But to be safe you can do as someone suggested and buy a .45 model and get a .22 conversion.
