Anyone know the best place to take a look at some Kimber 1911's?

Was looking at some photos of their ultra carry II and it's quite nice - I'd like to hold a few different guns and see how they feel

Cabelas Canada,
Frontier Taxidermy
Wolverine Supply

Thay all stock Kimbers, but aren`t near Toronto unfortunately.

Epps`in Orillia has kimbers too..? bit of a drive though.

I'm going to take a look at some Kimbers at lunch time, hopefully. I really want a Custom II with a stainless slide and adjustable sights and nice rosewood grips! Hopeully they've got them at Cabela's or WSS, not that it helps you out.

I've heard they use a lot of MIM parts and their QC has been out to lunch on occasion, hopefully not the case.

Internet rumors are a wonderful thing ;)... Kimber did have some QC issues a few years back but they seem to be making a lot of headway in addressing them. Unfortunately the internet loves to recirculate old news...

As for the whole MIM thing... Guess what? Virtually every modern gun out there has a least a few MIM parts in it. There is nothing wrong with MIM manufacturing technology if it is used appropriately and the manufacturing processes are properly QC'ed. Again, years ago (when MIM was somewhat new to the firearms industry) there were a few issues with MIM parts being used in places where they were not appropriate. Not a MIM problem at all, but rather a problem of bad industrial design. A problem that most companies including Kimber have addressed.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, especially when the complaints were peaking, Kimber sold more 1911s in a year than all other 1911 manufacturers put together. So yeah, they should have more complaints and failures than any other 1911 manufacturer. If you sell 10 times as many guns, all things being equal, you will have 10 times as many complaints as the other companies... No big mystery there. :)

Apologies to the OP for the hijack. :) I just wanted to reassure you that Kimbers are great guns. I'm sure you will be impressed when you handle one in person! But be aware that the compact Kimbers, such as the one you mention, come stock with 4" barrels that would make them prohib here. :( SO the ones the ship to Canada have longer - non prohib - barrels that stick out slightly past the end of the slide. They still look fine, I just wanted to give you a heads up so you're not wondering why the gun in the store looks different from the one in all the pictures.

Thanks guys!

krausb: I assumed they were small guns from the pictures, and the carry designation, so I expected the longer barrel (aka p229 barrel) but I didn't actually see a photo of one until you posted it ... I don't think it looks that bad at all, at least the barrel is polished and somewhat conical, not to mention huge (I only own a 9mm) so it's kinda cool too

Actual Danimal247, you won't be able to find any of the Ultra Carry models in Canada. :( The Ultras have 3 inch barrels and aren't available with a 106mm barrel. Sorry. I guess you'll have to look at the Pro Carry models (as shown in the photo above) instead.

Just came back from drooling over various pistols at lunch. I'm taking CRFSC this weekend so haven't had a chance to try anything, but I will say this. Kimber. F*ck yeah. Definitely want a full-size Custom II more than anything now.

even more than the Custom II Elite Pro Carry Night Elf Mohawk Stainless?

(no Kimber thread is complete without poking fun at the names)

If your interested in a "carry" style gun check out the sig 1911 in ss. I was interested in the kimber until I realized it had the fugly barrel sticking out the end. I was also looking into the custom II with adjustable sights its a very very nice gun, but the "compactness" of the sig is what sold me and it doesn't have the fugly barrel.
