My brother just got back from his moose hunt (skunked, but he learned a lot, it was his first time out)

At any rate, he was talking to some other hunters who were in the area and one group was down a trail in a swamp. The guy spent two days in the swamp calling. He finally calls one in, and then some guy drives up (Not member of the party) in a quad, gets off the quad and shoots the moose that this fellow spent two days of time to call in.

My thinking when I go hunting on crown land is when you see a vehicle parked at the entrance to a trail, you don't go down it. It's "occupied" for lack of a better word. They got there before you did, too bad, so sad. Not only do I think it is bad form to do this, I would also be worried a bit about safety, You may be going up a trail where there may be several hunters present. You don't know these guys, what their safety habits are. I would want to risk it.

What do you fellows/gals think of this?

I don't know, that's the way it goes sometimes. I mean, I don't like it when guys are just tooling around on quads with a gun, and I hate it when it happens to be in my hunting area.

But the guy didn't know that the other guy had been calling in a moose for two days (how do you call in a moose for two days anyways? Call all night?) He probably didn't even know there was a caller around, just saw the moose and shot it.

And I can't agree with you on the whole "occupied" trail thing. For starters, I know a lot of massive backcountry areas with one or only a few access points. So bowing out cause somebody got there first means that they may have hundreds of square miles to themselves. And safety is always an issue; there may be someone down any trail, so I'm not sure that's much of a concern. I mean, it's ALWAYS a concern, whether or not there's a truck parked near your trail.

Bottom line for me is, it's all public land; I'll stay out of other hunter's way as much as possible, but they can't assume that because they've got a stand a hundred yards in on the main trail that I'm not going to walk past it to get where I want to go.

If you don't want your hunt getting wreaked by yahoos on quads, find a spot where the quads can't go. If you want some country to yourself, either buy some, or be ready to wear out a pair of boots getting in away from the roads.

If I see someone in an area I leave. I've had people roar up to me on their quads when I'm hunting:mad: and wonder why I'm not the friendliest fellow out in the woods.

If the guy knew your buddy was out there then he's an asshat! Seems more and more of them are occupying the woods these days.
There's a fellow around town here who's getting quite the reputation as a poacher. Latest news is that he shoots a huge bull moose close to town and then abandons the carcass as it's too much work to get it out!
If you can get back to shoot it, how come he couldn't retrieve the meat?

Like I said, more and more asshats in the woods.

"Simular" to an experience a buddy of mine had the other day...

They arrived to hunt a spot, for ducks from shore, got set up and another couple guys show up with a boat. My buddies gave them a flash of the flashlight to let them know they were there...

The reply they could "hear" was cursing etc... sounds carry well over water...

Anyhow, towards the end of the am hunt, my buddies shot a male mallard and it fell wounded into the water and started swimming for the center of the river... My buddies brother took off after it with his shotgun and chest waders, only to run out of shells trying to finish it and the water got too deep...

Well, those guys that arrived "later" than my buddies did... must have seen what was happening, cause they immediately took out their boat, picked up the duck from mid-river, and "showed it" from a distance to my buddies AND LEFT WITH IT!!!

Well by the F**K, was that ####ty or what??? Makes me wish I was there with my boat, I would have had a "discussion" with those a$$holes!

Cheers
Jay

I had a simliar thing occur a few years back way up north in a logging area.

We had been hunting a valley (only one way in) for a few days and always left the quad about a kilometer away parked across the trail.

Some guys drive right by it and make all kinds of noise, yapping and such, and one of the guys walks right down the trail into the valley about 25 yards from my stand.

'Hey', I say.

The guy never notice me in the tree stand, turns and is startled and quickly asks 'Hows the hunting?'

'Awful, too many #######s wandering around without regard to the fact that other folks might be hunting the area'.

He realized his mistake but still walked right through the center of the area that we were hunting.
