Kinda wishing I'd gone with the 6.5 Creedmore...

Hey lads, I just purchased a Ruger M77 in 7mm-08 off of here. I went to Walmart and Can Tire (I live in a small town) yesterday and was only able to find one option of cartridge in each store. A 150gr at can tire and a 140gr at walmart. I knew the ammo wasn't going to be cheap, but I've heard so many good things about the 7mm-08, I went for it.

The reason I say I am wishing I'd gone with the Creedmore is, there are a lot more choices here in bullet weight and manufacture for less cost per box...

I am a deer and black bear hunter... will probably never hunt moose or elk... but the chance is there to draw an elk tag here.

What do you think? Sell the rifle for a 6.5 Creedmore? Or hold onto it and stop cryin? :)
 
were I u, i'd have gone with the 7/08 -it's one heck of a deer /bear cartridge, and what's the cents( pun intended) of a few more grains of powder over a range that you probably shouldn't take anyway- ie the chances of u getting a clean shot or kill in bush country are slim at best- my goto is a 308/165/180 depending on the terrain(300 yards)- if you really want to get into whomp and stomp, it's hard to beat the 338/250 at 600
 
and learn how to reload if you really want to take advantage of a cartridge, b/c all factory loads are a COMPROMISE-
 
Hold on to it and stop crying. The 6.5 is popular and very capable, but there is very little the 7-08 won't do equally as well, if not better. 140's or 150's in the 7-08 will be just fine for your deer and black bears. How much is the difference in ammo cost? How much are you shooting it? If you're like most hunters, you'll shoot less than a box per year. The extra few dollars over a year won't make a difference, especially if you look at the potential $ difference in getting rid of the 7-08 and finding a 6.5
 
If it’s just for hunting, how much ammo will you be using?
Reloading is always a good way to “have your cake and eat it too”. 7mm o8 isn’t too far behind 6.5 ballistically.
 
Used to reload... but that was quite a while ago and I let the gear go.

And yes, I probably pull the trigger 10 times a year including sight in. So the extra cost isn't so much the issue, more ammo availability.

Just a bit of buyers remorse I guess. Almost every article I've read is in preference of the 7mm-08 over the 6.5... but they are so close, I feel it is splitting hairs
 
that maybe all that's reasonably close to him- I live in Calgary and can't remember when I bought ammo at either store- but then again I've been rolling my own for50 years- and you should see the looks I get when I go into 'tire or wally and ask for44 mag ammo- which of course they don't have
 
Order from Cabellas on a free shipping day like today, they have a pretty decent selection. Get enough to last you a few years...
 
That is exactly why I bought a 270 instead of a 7mm08. Now that I reload I yearn for a lightweight 7mm08 though.

You can always buy ammo online too. Shipping hurts though.

Edit - Hitzy makes a good point about Cabelas. Free shipping, reasonable selection. Hard to argue with.

You've explained your thoughts on the two cartridges but you haven't told us how you feel about the rifle itself?
If You are fond of the rifle and it's a proven shooter I wouldn't sell it and roll the dice on a new one when the chamberings are so close performance wise.

That is the question as well. I haven't shot it yet. I picked up a box of ammo yesterday in anticipation of the rifle showing up. I will have to spend some time and money to determine if it likes either of the offerings in town here. If it doesn't like either ammo I guess I will sell it in hopes of getting a 6.5 that likes one of the numerous offerings available to me here.
 
I love my 65 Creedmoor. Versatile, light recoil etc etc. But for your use, I would keep the 708. Order ammunition by the 100 round count from our vendors here, or get into reloading.

Others have more experience than I with the hunting aspect, but from what I have seen taken in terms of game etc, the 708 is a pure winner as is 308, and 3006.
