Anyone know anything about a King Machinery KC-20VS milling machine? It looks like an X2 machine with the square back, has a 1hp dc motor, variable speed, two speed gearbox, digital depth readout. I'd like something for small projects, like milling dovetails in steel (like barrels) or small aluminum projects.

A few years ago when I was looking at them they had the pdm 25 and the pdm 30. Of what king had to offer in a bench top the pdm 30 was the way to go. Do not know how much their machinery has changed since then, but I did notice they are not selling the 25 anymore.

The PDM 30 is a drill first and a mill second. If your budget is enough for the PDM 30, you are way better of buying a Sieg SX3. At least wih the Sieg, you have a good machine to start with and can eventually be converted to CNC if you wish.

Buy the biggest mill you can make fit, put a dro on it and be happy. I put a 3800lb 600V mill in my basement, wish I still had it, it was great!! But then there is CNC.........

Grizzly in the US, Craftex from Busy Bee, Harbor freight. All the so called variants are pretty muh the same , but like any branded product there are differences, and you will have to google the variants to find the differences. Siegs are generally regarded as a very good machines for their size and cost, and many have been converted to CNC machines.

I have a KING PDM-30
basicly, it is a hobby machine
you have to keep lighter cuts at lower rpm or it will start to vibrate
the stand is waisted money
the tools that come with the machine(vise-chuck) are pure garbage
I made a digital readout for the chuck with a 6" caliper
it works fine enough so I made a modular stock out of scrap alluminium last year for my old mauser
