Kiwi's Select LMT as New Service Rifle

So New Zealand? - the country without an air force because they couldn't get parts. Chose a weapons system that they're 8000 miles away from parts for and for which they probably won't buy parts? NZ procurement makes CF procurement look like Nobel Laureates. They originally bought the AUG because the Australians were using them and commonality in supply and parts availability made sense, in that light, this doesn't make a ton of sense. All things considered the order is for less than 7,000 troops, so it might not make a difference - New Zealand got the military that PET wanted for Canada. Sad given their great military tradition and the quality of their troops.

It's tough to go to war with 2 infantry battalions, so I don't think parts resupply will be an issue.

When offering up a few dozen troops for a contribution to a multinational force they will be able to beg US parts if required.

I guess, but they don't like the Americans any more either, they're out of the ANZUS treaty - leaving just the Aussies and Americans in that one. The good news is that the NDP don't have to create anything if they get elected, they can just follow the Kiwi plan and take Canada into international irrelevance.

X2

Seriously professional army, stripped in material and numbers by a series of pc governments. Man per man would give any army in the world a run for their money. Very sad indeed.

Candocad.

I had no idea New Zealand doesn't even have an air force. (as in any fighter jets, at all)

Maybe they should at least have 10 or 20 or so, something reliable like a twin engine workhorse like the Super Hornet or something.

I was going to say Super Gripen, but being single engine and New Zealand being out by itself in the Pacific Ocean...

The country is a bit naked with nothing at all for defence.

New Zealand has a population of 4.5 million, Canada has a population of 35 million. The GDP per capital between the two nations is $41500 for New Zealand and $51900 for Canada(both in US dollars). Canada has about 79 operational CF-18's. The Kiwi military budget for 2014 was $2.87 billion(USD) as opposed to Canada's $17.6 billion(USD). A couple dozen fighters simply isn't in the budget..

...and never will be given the governments they keep electing. The future of Canada under a "progressive" government. After the Christchurch earthquake, it's taken years to get anything done as the government strives to build a "green" city. Meanwhile people have lost their property so new green spaces can be set up. As of 2013 there were still shopping malls built of shipping containers - 2 years after the quake.

We can't afford and don't have the desire to field a potent defense force. We depend heavily on our isolation for our defense. We will never be able to afford remotely effective air assets, let alone ships, tanks etc. But by all accounts our individual soldiers are fairly effective and we'll equipped.

New Zealand doesn't really have a lot of strategic significance these days. There is no reason for anyone to take it, unless they want to harvest wool and sheep milk with their own hands...,.

Their military is really for contributing to intl missions.

Half a sea can is probably more than they need for all the parts to support all their rifles in the next 10 years.

Hey, I've got it. Super Tucanos....

They're cheap, and can do virtually anything including shooting into space, so I've heard...
