Klingon 4head 35 Whelen "range report added"

I agree with 280Ackley....the Whelen is a seriously under rated cartridge....my 9 pound 24" 35 Whelen Rem 700 in an HS stock puts 225 Partitions out at a bit over 2700.....this is seriously close to a factory 338 Win Mag load....and recoils a lot less than my almost identical 300 Win Mag.....and Rel15 is THE powder for the Whelen...and , it's not a "short range cartridge" like some will tell you...the above load is down about 10" at 300 meters when sighted 2-1/2" high at 100 meters..

35 whelen

I have been using a 35 whelen since 84 and so far I have found IMR 4320 to be one of the best powders. I get 3/4" groupings at 100 yds if I do my part. have not tried any of the newer powders as 4320 seems to do a good job.

In my 35 Imp I'm using 57 grs 4320 -- 250 gr Speer hot core at 2565 fps . Not a hot load but very accurate in my old mauser 98.

Don't know if I would shoot these loads in a Semi-auto, but here is what I am shooting in my 700 CDL 35 Whelen. 250 Speer with 58.5 grains of RL 15 for a velocity average of 2565 fps...a real thumper if ever there was one!! The 225 Partition leaves at 2750 chased by 61 grains of RL 15. I also shot the 250 Hornady with 58.0 grains of RL 15 and it 'graphs 2530 fps. I am working up loads with Vihtavuori N540 right now, using the 225 grainer, and it looks like it is going to be a ringer load, with similar charges giving very close velocities as compared to RL 15. Very clean and consistent as well. These loads all shoot MOA or less BTW. I'm impressed with the Whelen, but Thank goodness for the R3 pad!;) :D Regards, Eagleye.

Thanks BIGREDD for the KlingonFH range report. I was looking forward to it. Thanks 4 the range pics. Is yours the rifle or carbine?
You've inspired me to get out and try some real accuracy work with my 35Whelen semi.

Very reasonable remark - but I might add my own experience and personal knowledge with two different Remington 35 Whelen Semis (Both non improved M7400s) is that they digest max loads (even over published max loads in some cases) without balking at all - cycling reliably - especially with top loads of ReL 15. Your results may differ as always - work up safely. The semis REALLY soak up the felt recoil.

The 750 we tested is a rifle not a carbine, and I agree totally with the comment's about Max loads... work up slowly.
My experience with Rem Semis is, if they are properly maintained they will work fine with Max loads.

They are saying that the gas system is improved... I know for sure that the ports/gas valves are new. I can tell you it feels smoother in every way.
I have heard that they are using all new dies and machining tools on these rifles. I don't think that Guy will let me pull his rifle apart... without a struggle.

Thanks for the report. I realy liked shooting my 7400 30-06 carbine. It as well on the bench would shoot sub 1" groups. Would cycle great when kept clean. Used the remington teflon dry lube. HICK UPs would never happen on the bench or a fair weather day. I had Problems when the gun got wet and a little dirty walking through the bush, then is when my 7400 would Jamm. Fair weather day at the range after a good cleaning would never Jamm. I as well would like to try the new Rem 750 in 35Whelan. Great read! Thanks again for the range report. Also Great choice for glass on your Rem. I love my Vari X III on my Marlin guide Gun . Cheers!

Well they would need new dies and tools if the design of the gas system has changed, but somehow I doubt they'd retool for the receiver which looks, to me, to be that same piece of steel as used on the 740... no?

For that matter, the bolt and many other small parts are probably from the same bin I should think.

Too bad it's only available in the beavertail and Monte Carlo stock. I intensely dislike both stock features. Any chance 740/742 furniture would swap on?
