I am gonna test a Klingon in 35 Whelen tomorrow...
Guy has a bunch of handloads ready to try... this is a brand new unfired Rem 750.
I am interested more in the function and feel of this rifle right now than I am in the accuracy.
I have repeatedly said that these rifles should perform well... I got my fingers crossed.... a semi in .35 Whelen.... I am going to dig out one of the steel sillouttes for this test... Woo Hoo!:D

I will get some pics and I will try to be objective:rolleyes:

Heat? What heat? ;) It was 4C here at work last night and only 6C when we got back to town this morning  Yup, only 2 months until sheep hunting starts and 2 1/2 months till moose opens around here  :D

Well I gotta tell you I am impressed with the Remington 750... Cycles flawlessly and is a pleasure to shoot. The trigger is a little long and creepy... and breaks at about 4 pounds... not too bad for a box stock semi.
The magazine takes some effort to seat when the bolt is closed but stays firmly in place once clipped in. It helps to manipulate the release tab when loading the mag.
The rifle is very comfortable to carry... one handed the balance point is with two fingers on the mag and two in front... you will never forget or lose your mag this way.;)
Guy installed a Leupold 1.5 -5 scope and we did our bench work off of the Caldwell Lead Sled... no mistakes with that rest.

It took exactly three shots to sight it @25 yds... then we cleaned and cooled the barrel... break in procedure... then we tried a shot @ 100 it was a perfect bullseye... I s**t you not!

At this point you gotta know that Guy is going to keep this rifle for ever... four shots in and it is drilling bullseyes @ 100 with a 5X scope...
Guy then shot a three shot string @ 100 with a hot barrel in about 45 seconds.... you could almost cover the holes with a quarter.:)

We were using some loads that Guy had taken out of Ackleys Data Book... and I will post the data with his permission if anyone is interested... 200grain round nose bullets.
I tried a very quick three shot group at 200 yards... I dropped a shot due to lumpy air but the group was still about 2 1/2 inches. I am betting that it will be a Sub MOA shooter @200yds with the right guy on the trigger.

We did a bunch of off hand shooting at 50 yards and the gun is a dream to shoot.. recoil is very manageable and the recovery time is very fast... I have not lost my touch and I pounded the 50 yard target rapid fire.
We decided to get off the range at this point because it was quickly approaching 30 degrees and we want to break the barrel easy and slow.... and the air con at the house was looking mighty good.
All and all I think this new/reworked Remington is a solid rifle and we plan on doing a lot more shooting with the Klingon Whelen when it cools off a bit...
Two thumbs up... if you can find one ...buy it.:)

Thanks BR, that was a good report. Are you saying the first picture is of a 4 shot group?

looks like they shot 3 times @ 25y and that was the first shot @ 100y. if I understood right :)

35 whelen semi is serious medicine, forehead or not!

Yeah T/B you are correct. We shot 3 rounds at 25 then the bullseye was the fourth shot from a cold clean barrel at 100 yds... after a lot of laughing and carrying on we adjusted for an inch and a half high and shot the quick three shot group.
I still can't get over how friendly that rifle is to shoot... maybe there is something to be said for big bores.
Has anybody got any pet loads or preferred bullet weights for the .35 Whelen... I have a new addiction.

You guys have to stop posting about the Whelen! I was just advised yesterday that my .35 barrel had arrived and I shipped my Ruger .30-06 for a ### change. That's all I can think about now!:D I would also be interested in pet loads but from what I've read so far, Rel 15 seems to be "the" powder for the Whelen.

Try 55gr of Varget with a 250gr Speer Hotcore.... that is one HAMMER of a load for 2500fps and nearly 2550fps with 55.5gr of Varget.

Another that I've had great luck with is 57gr of Varget and a 225gr TSX @ 2725 fps and it is a devastating load as well.

The beauty of the Whelen lies in the fact that you get med bore performance with little recoil (my 7lb 1oz scoped Whelen boots on par with a sporter 300mag... not bad for the payload it delivers).

One of the most underrated cartridges IMHO... and a damn fine one at that.

Thanks for the report, looks like the Ol' Klingon shoots mighty fine... and seems to be somewhat gentle on the shoulder too.

Hard part for you will now be trying to refrain from buying/building one!
