So I live in the suburban "hinterland" of Metro Vancouver... if any such area 30 minutes East of GM Place could be called "hinterland". I have a pack of about a dozen Coyotes wandering the fields behind my sub-division. When I drive home late at night, I have recently witnessed 2 - 3 of the wily dogs preying on small pets in a quasi pack-hunt. It is actually kinda neat to witness. Regardless, to my question for those who are in the know. When my GF has been out walking the pup late at night the last several nights, they are in the bushes across the street and she won't go out alone now because her and the pup are freaked by the growling, yipping and thrashing in the brush directly across the road from my house.

Oh, this is also one of the "new" subdivisions they put up in formerly abandoned industrial/farm land, so there are about 500 townhouses around me as well.

Its a shot only (Single-Projectile is restricted) area with permission from landowner during hunting season. I don't want to freak my neighbors out, but the city won't do a damned think about these brazen coyotes, and if they are "stalking" my gf and dog (which I wouldn't have believed before last week), then something must be done.

If I am on my suburban property and I need to shoot a coyote, what are the risks from legal entanglements?

I don't have anything to add other than I have twice seen coyotes in the middle of St. John's. Right on Kenmount road next to a radio station. It was kinda freaky. My wife was with me and her comment was "that dog is so ugly". To which I replied "that isn't A DOG...its a Coyote".

Urban coyotes are the most dangerous, they have no fear. I would camp out in the middle of nowhere with a thousand wild coyotes before I would sleep on the streets with five of your coyotes.

It sounds to me like a headache waiting to happen, if you get a gun out city folks are going to be freaked out and I think it would just land you in ho####er.
Unless its self defence I doubt you will have any luck, even then you would have to explain why you had a gun out. Any chance there would be farm close by that you could hunt from?

Yeah in the urban environment a good baseball bat or bear spray is the best defense weapon against these buggers. firearms discharge will cause you unwanted problems.

Call em' into Hastings.

Nobody will think twice about the sound of a 12 guage. Just be sure to yell "break yo' self fool" before you shoot to cover everything up.

Yup, they have aggressive tendencies and like to play games. Liking seeing how close they can get to you before you notice or acknowlege them, then they back off. Use to run into them out jogging along the ravines in Toronto

Your not going to do much with a pellet gun trying to scare of them yotes. That type of lead poisoning will take forever to kill them.
The bigger problem is the food supply and not really the pets that are lost to these smart animals.
It is us humans who leave all kinds of trash out or just toss it into someones yard or back alley. Come to Richmond and see what lazy a**holes from other areas are dumping in or along the Fraser River, they come from all over to get rid of their s**te just to save a few dollars by not taking it to a transfer station, anyways I digress...
I have spoke of it before and will say it again, The Repulik of Kailfornia 25 years ago tried to eradicate these pests there by killing them short of sending out armed snipers . They tried to trap them and kill them, trap and nueter the males and mass poisoning. All this did was cause mother nature to react by instilling these animals with self preservation, Breed and Breed fast, there was a mass explosion on these hybrids .
What they figured out was take away the food and the population will decline.
Did they learn ? Yes.
Where they successful in getting rid of the coyotes?
Nope, they are still there because people are to dam lazy to work on the solution.
So , after all my rambling and your still with me, you have two choices, live with the dam wild dogs or do something to curtail their free food in your hood.
IOf this doent seem reasonable, you can always google or even You Tube the moron in Victoria that tried to beat several raccoons to death with a hockey stick or the person/persons that shot a Skunk with a bow and arrow using a field point .I used the derogatory term moron cause this person is more of a danger to others than the skunks by shooting in a populated area of Vancouver !
Just my .02 opine this morning.

Thanks for the input. I don't know where you got "pellet gun" from, I never mentioned that. Its a shotgun permitted zone that prohibits "single projectiles", so I could blast the ####ers with double-ought. However Its tough to justify the discharge of a shotgun when the cops roll-up.

There is no-way that stupid people are going to stop putting their pet cats and dogs out at night. That is the source of food.

People encroaching on wild-animal's land is certainly the cause of the problem, but seriously, I'm not going anywhere and I don't think my neighbors are either. Thats the nature of urbanization and population growth.

Robson St. in Vancouver used to be forest. Now its a major business centre. Should we raze the high-rises, kick-out the bankers and businesses and create a Coyote Sanctuary? No.

I think I missed a point in your opening comments.
"single pellet" as opposed to plural meaning ssg or double OO Buck.
Hence my pellet gun comment.
Again, I do not have the solution or maybe I do?
But, I didnt think of it first. What we need to do is ensure that the food source for them dogs is limited and eventually nature will take its course.
Thanks for pointing out my error though.

.... I've seen the Damn things right "Downtown Vancouver" and actually saw one "Stalking " a Woman walking her "Mop on a String" Dog in what may well be the most expensive Neighborhood in Vancouver. Sitting outside at a Sidewalk Café, two walked nonchalantly by us less than 3 feet away. .... Living in Surrey, close to Bear Creek Park, a number of Coyotes, both Adult and Juvenile, would come up one of the small Creeks opposite to where our House was. It was getting a little serous as there were a number of small Children, mine included, playing in the area. Guess they found better Hunting Grounds before I has to take drastic steps !..... NP. I have edited for clarity. Thanks for pointing that out.

I the thing is, is aside from posting a picture and notice on a power-pole and ball-park diamond fencing, people rush right out and buy another puppy or cat, and turn it loose at night, to be eaten again. These are the same people that cry about the poor coyote wildlife being tortured, when calls to have them culled are made public.

When I used to drive from Abby to Langley, I would see the scrawny-est, mangy looking, underfed feral coyotes in the grassy highway medians. These dogs in PM/MR are fat and glossy. They look like skinnier wolves actually. They are exceptionally healthy looking.

.. If they are in an area frequented by Children, the Potential is there for a Tragedy. Thus, try to have either Conservation Officers deal with them or the SPCA. ( The Coyotes, NOT the Children ! ) The Municipality MAY be of some help, in that there MAY be a Pest Removal Contractor available to assist, at the Municipality's Expense. ... A "Do it Yourself" solution, has the potential, to cause a lot more grief than anyone would want, and it's one I certainly would not recomend ! ...... David K

I'll play that angle. This area is adjacent to the longest walking-trail park in the Metro Vancouver area, Four (4) ball diamonds and Two (2) soccer fields, not to mention Two (2) "Community Gardens" and a Playground. No schools, but 1,200 family's, many with kids. Good suggestion! "...If it saves just one child's life!". Oops, can I use that argument??

.. Coyotes are smart enough, to only Breed Up, to What their Range/Food Supply will support. One of the key tools to Manage them is to limit or preferably, eliminate their food Source. With Humans, who think Coyotes are either "cute", or just really Hungry and abandoned Dog's, and consequently, give them "Handouts" it's hard to achieve ! Garbage Days are an "Urban Coyote's" version of a Smörgåsbord ! ..... David K
