Anyone have one of these? I thought awhile ago there was one on the EE but several searches has turned up nothing.

I have a friend who wants a black powder gun. His stipulation was it has to be massive and put out copious amounts of smoke.:D

Thanks for your help.

yeh i have had one in 58 cal and in 50 the 58 was a Safari Arms brand (very good) and the other was a CVA (poor quality) Pedersolli makes them very well and can be ordered through Marstar or Granlund Firearms

Not to hijack but.................

Did you ever get the barrels to regulate in either of them, and if so what was you process.

Hi

I just sold my 72 cal Pedersoli....

It was a great muzzle loader. Shot 3 to 4" groups @ 100 yrds, two leaf Williams rear sight. Shot a 735 gr ball with patch. 100gr of goex FFg (no more as it's a waste) felt wad. Go with the Pedersoli, you will not regret it.

Crap! That was the one I was after too! :( He wanted to go big as well as have a classic to hang on the wall. I wonder what the chances of finding another are?
Maybe your buyer will realize how much lead he is going to use in short order and will consider selling it to my buddy! :p

Abhobbiest, no worries man, the more discussed about the gun the better regardless of cal. I don't want to get my friend a POC. Let 'er fly.;)

You're right, those Safari Arms Kodiaks are excellent. The barrels were actually made by Pedersoli, in fact, now that I think of it, the whole gun was made by Pedersoli for Safari Arms back in the late 1970's? Beautifull finnish and workmanship. The prices went up big time when the Kodiak came out under the full Pedersoli name.

Ouch! They're not cheap are they! This might be a wake up call for him for needing copius smoke. Hope not, I'd like to try one of these beasts.

I held a four bore double ten years ago and boy would that be fun to shoot........well once anyway.

Theres a few companys in the US take a Antique pre 1898 Cartridge DB SXS shotgun like a 12 ga or 16 Ga and line the both barrels with 45 70 barrels.

There hammer guns look very cool have Antique Status because the Action is Antique.

I have thought about buying one as a Double Barrel SXS 45 70 is just a neat gun to have.
They sell for about $1600 US and up tho.
I will see if i can find a picture. One side could be 28 ga and the other 45 70 as well..

Just to be a little smug, the one below is an oval bore 12 guage and the barrel is .018" out of round making 1/2 turn in the length of the barrel. Think of it as two rifling grooves each occupying 1/2 the barrel. Gun is made by Charles Lancaster and is a rifle.

Also a note on the Kodiak; both Safari Arms and CVA are import firms and their guns are foreign made and in fact would not surprise me if the Kodiaks sold under both names are actually made by Pedersoli. It is my impression that the early Kodiaks were regulated and had only one rear sight while after the first few years, they switched to unregulated and a separate rear sight for each barrel/

The 72 cal SAFARI EXPRESS RIFLE Pedersoli is listed as $1,145.00 at shooter choice.

Nice 12 bore mooncoon.

This fellow just got back to me. he wants to try one of these out before buying. LOL Anyone around Cochrane have a smokepole for my friend to try?

Thanks for the heads up Pete. Marstar looks to have them too, slightly less money but I've not heard good things regarding the service aspect of things.

Shooter's Choice on the other hand as very good to deal with.

How does it group mooncoon very nice looking piece.Do you load them slugs into brass 12gauge hulls?

So far it needs a bit more development and I am thinking of making the slug a trifle larger. I made the slug midway between bore and groove diameter and cast them out of pure lead if my memory is correct. I loaded them with 80 gr of 2F then a shotgun cushion wad and then the slug and used a plastic shell with the crimping petals trimmed off. I took the pattern for the slug from an illustration in a late 1800's newspaper.

In answer to Noel, at $20/ lb for powder that works out to roughly $.23 for powder, .01 or .02 for the wad, .04 for the primer and at current new price of lead around .07 for the slug and a total of $.36 per shot. On the other hand you usually only take maybe 10 shells or so to the range so about the equivalent of a couple of beers at the bar.

Double rifles are not easy to regulate and seemingly small changes like thickness of skirt or length of bullet can make a big difference

"...has to be massive and put out copious amounts of..." BP firearms don't have to be massive to put out copious amounts of smoke.
"...They're not cheap are they!..." Nope. The last Pedersoli Sharps copy I saw was around a grand or more. And not recently either. A reproduction of a Brown Bess can run 2 grand.
"...to hang on the wall..." Trigger locked, of course. Having firearms hanging on a wall, depending on whether or not said wall is visibly from the door or window, can be an invitation to a break in.

Perhaps worth going back to the original criteria; what does he consider massive? .58 cal is fairly large to most people and he could buy a replica of an Enfield musket or there must be Springfield replicas on the market. Both of those would be considerably less frustrating to shoot than a double rifle. They are also within the limits of what can be shot at rondyvous and just generally seem more practical.

All he told me was it had to be crazy big, very cool looking and make um big smoke ugh! Perhaps it is more me than him leaning for the double as I've always wanted to try one moreso than the usual single chimney variation....

A single barrel might be just fine too. We are just starting to get the feelers out for what is available. I haven't told him what it would cost to get all the other goodies yet, we are still going through that too.
