Looks like there have been a number of Australian movies/documentaries (some replete with Owen SMG's!) about Kokoda.

Can anyone advise as to a quality production, or a good book on the Kokoda?

I have a paperback here called just "Kokoda". It was sober and readable account as I recall.

Slightly "Off Track"

... Slightly "off track", but the Owen Gun was still in front line service with Australian Troops during the early stages of the Vietnam War and performed admirably. Believe it or not, but Cadet Units ( my Schools Cadet Unit had about six Owens, plus a couple of Vickers, Mortars and Brens ) also actually had them in inventory, and the vertical magazine was incorporated with the Owen's eventual replacement, the F1..... If I remember my History correctly, The Kokoda Trail was the first time the Japanese had been turned back on land, and to this day many Australians make a Pilgrimage to the 'Trail. Gallipoli also is a focal point for Australian and New Zealand's History Buffs ( ANZAC )..... David K

"A bastard of a place" by Peter Brune is a very detailed reference but covers the whole Papua campaign, Kokoda, Milne Bay and the northern beachheads. "Those ragged bloody heroes" same author focuses more on Kokoda. Both excellent reading. "We band of brothers" is the story of lieutenant colonel Ralph Honner as a battalion commander through North Africa, Greece and Papua New Guinea but goes into some detail on the 39th battalion he commanded on the Kokoda trail. The 39th was the first unit to engage the Japanese on the trail and is a riveting story. I'd highly recommend all three.
