Korean War: Russian version

King Haakon

Greenland not only had bishop in the southern Greenlandic town of Gardar (now Igaligo), but Lief Ericson mother, Tjodhilde, build the first Christian Church ever in North America and the Western Hemishere, in year 1000.

Also, Greenland became the first to be part of a european kingdom in North America in year 1269, when Norwegian King Haakon the First, was elected king, in return for six ship loads of supplies from Norway, every year.

The legendary Viking Chief, Eric the Red, in year 986, also named his newly dicovered land: "Greenland", in order to con and lure more settlers to settle in Greenland:)

snowhunter. Interesting information on King Haakon. My father served on the Kings Guard for Haakon VI, from 1919 to 1921. I did not reliase the Haakons reigned that far back in history.

Due to the Jpanese occupation of Korea, many Koreans fled to either China or the USSR.
Those refugees in the USSR were drafted into the Soviet army wholesale. I understand much of the NKPA leadership went through the great patriotic war and were later sent to north korea as the backbone of the NKPA. The ending of the chinese civil war found a few tens of thousands more, dumped into the fledgling NKPA.

I expect this is the number of 'soviets' quoted.

"The Black Dead" spread to Bergen, Norway, for a while, put and end to the Norwegian kings support to the Viking settlement Greenland, and in 1389, when Norway and Denmark became a unified kingdom, Greenland also came under the Danish kings reign.

However, Denmark supported the losing Napoleon, and as punishment lost Norway to Sweden, in the Kiel-Peace Treaty of 1814, the Danes were allowed, under strong protest from Norway, to keep Greenland.

After Norway's independece from Sweden, there has been several attempts by Norwegian Governments to reclaim Greenland from the Danes, including Norwegian annexation of large part og Eastern Greenland in 1930-33, sending a Governor, Helge Ingstad, which the World Court declared illegal. The danes and Norwegian came very close to af shooting war.

Helge Ingstad is also known in Canada for having, together with his wife, in 1961, for finding the only Viking settlement in Canada, L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland.

Polish janitor who served with 3 armies and was held prisoner by two others

.

Sounds like my grandpa's brother:
Served in Polish Army in '39,prisoner of Red Army till '43,Anders Polish Army till Africa, prisoner of Italians for a short while, back with Anders till '45,went back home just to be -you guessed it-imprisoned again by Red Army till '53.
God rest his soul.He was a good man.

History is a funny thing-it changes dramatically with the point of view AND with time.

Hang on-what does this discussion have to do do with milsurps? Me thinks wrong forum...

What a laughable load!!

Do you really think that Stalin was ever on "our" side?

1. I'm not suggesting he was in love with us.
2. The question asked was why do people forget about Stalin's alliance with the Nazi regime and complicity in the invasion of Poland. The fact that on our side it became official policy to tell our people that "Uncle Joe" was on our side had a lot to do with it.

Germans first took back the land that was taken from them during the treaty of Versailles. Who took who's land?

now now... How far back do you want to go? Poland was partitioned by the Germans, Austrians, and Russians late in the 18th century. Self determination never dies. That said, don't forget, but forgive.

Should have rearmed the Germans after their surrender and wiped out the Russians...............Harold

Most wanted to continue the fight against communism, but Britain and the US had another front to deal with. The most I refer to is those who lost their democracies to communism after WWII.

Because they could focus on one enemy at a time not a 1/2 dozen countries. The Russian winter beat the Germans just like Napoleon. This isn't a pro Nazi statement it anti-Soviet.They rearmed Japanese soldiers in some parts of Asia to police the population and keep order? Stalin and Mao had a higher body count than Hitler....................Harold........didnt Patton suggest the same thing and got his knuckles rapped?

The Soviets didn't call it WW2 they called it The Great Patriotic War and as far as the land war went and losses sustained, thay did pretty much fight it alone.
Prior to the nazis violating the molotov ribbentrop pact the soviets were quite happy to take their share of the British empire and were eager and willing allies of the nazis. The russkies got all they deserved and should always be thankful to the allied merchant seamen who gave their lives supplying them.

Yes he did, because it was a stupid idea.

In 1945 Germany was a wasteland of rubble and starving refugees, half occupied by the Red Army which was very motivated against the Germans. The Red Army was stronger, more numerous, better equipped than it had ever been and led by tough, smart, battle proven commanders. It was a much more formidable force than the one the Wehrmacht had started out against in 1941 when it had all the advantages of strategic surprise and preparation and the Wehrmacht had failed in those much more favourable circumstances. In 1945 it was a shattered remnant. There was really nothing left to re-arm and send against anybody. And the Western Allies in NW Europe were short on manpower themselves. Some British and Canadian battalions were being cannibalised for manpower to keep others up to strenght. U.S. divisions were stripping clerks and cooks out of their rear echelons to re-build rifle companies shredded fighting their way into Germany. And the U.S. faced the prospect of invading and pacifying the Japanese home islands with little enough help from the other Western Allies and felt they absolutely needed the Red Army to counterbalance the largely untouched Japanese army in Manchuria.

Prussia and Sudetenland were always German. If not by treaty by people. Actually my great grandmother has an Austrian Identification from occupied Poland, before the first world war.
It was also never going to happen to send remainder of German units to fight the commies after the war, Like Patten and Churchill wanted. The will of the Germans to fight after this great loss was zero to none.

Interesting isn't it? One of those facts that is so obscure and unknown, it will probably never be officially written in the history books.

...that is unless they become the enemy again.

They have never stopped being the enemy, it's just the toned down a little.
Putin is the old KGB chief, and most of the previous crowd still run the place. Espionage, both political and industrial, continue against the west just like before. And the nuclear missiles....what ever happened to them? They are mostly still there and still aimed at western nations, just like before.

If it wasn`t for the Russians in WW2 we would be speaking German here right now.;)

Only because hitler doublecrossed Stalin. They were good buddies until he invaded russia. There were trainloads of russian wheat going into germany at the same time the german army was going the other way. Note that the cry was NOT "fight for communism" but rather "defend the motherland"
If the germans had come as liberators rather than conquerors, things may have gone the other way, but the nazi's typicaly acted like nazi's.

Another thought, Berlin might also have been treated to an atomic bomb.

Isn't it amazing what a difference in attitude can be brought about by one little nuke?

US military figured on a million killed, plus wounded, to take a solid foothold on the Japanese main islands...... and that many casualties again for the Japs. To finish the job would have required double that, possibly more: 4 million dead, plus wounded.

So they dumped a nuke, then waited.

Nothing.

So they dumped another.

Harry S. Truman was the greatest poker player in history; he had kings and queens showing and a deuce in the hole. Building another Bomb would have taken 9 more months, but Truman's bluff worked.

Funny, but you just can NOT get the bleeding-hearts to understand that.
