I am looking to upgrade my spotting scope and am considering the Kowa 663, probably with the 25X LER eyepiece.
Anyone using one of these? Opinions?

After getting a great recommendation from Hungry I just purchased that exact setup for our club recently from Pelee wings Nature store . Great optics . Got the case for the scope as well for $69.00 .
I also bought a rayvin tripod with extension pole as well from Creedmore sports

I was looking at the Peelee Wings site. Their prices are very competitive. Have had a Ray-Vin head on my Freeland stand for years, quite like it. I've been using an older small Kowa for quite some time. It has given excellent service, but it is time to upgrade.

What do you guys like about the Kowa?

I have the TSN 883. I compared it side by side to a Swarovski 80mmHD scope, and I prefer the Kowa, as far as brightness, resolution, and colors are concerned. The Swarovski was very good, but I find the Kowa, just slightly better for my eyes.

when you're going small, while the Kowa's are nice, they don't use the fluorite in their glass, it's only ED. at a store I used to work at, when we went below 80mm, we turned to the Nikon Fieldscopes. They're not cheap...but if weight and light gathering power/throughput is important, you do yourself a disservice not looking through them.

that said, I'm a Kowa fan. love the optics. I see a Highlander bino in my future. most impressive view through any large bino I've ever experienced. in fact, I described my first experience with them as gobsmacking. there is NO comparison...well, no comparison unless you can get a pair of the Dokter out of the EU.

Fluorite "schmorlite"!

From Nikons website...
ED
ED glass — an essential element of NIKKOR telephoto lenses
Nikon developed ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass to enable the production of lenses that offer superior sharpness and color correction by minimizing chromatic aberration.
Put simply, chromatic aberration is a type of image and color dispersion that occurs when light rays of varying wavelengths pass through optical glass. In the past, correcting this problem for telephoto lenses required special optical elements that offer anomalous dispersion characteristics — specifically calcium fluoride crystals. However, fluorite easily cracks and is sensitive to temperature changes that can adversely affect focusing by altering the lens’ refractive index.
So Nikon designers and engineers put their heads together and came up with ED glass, which offers all the benefits, yet none of the drawbacks of calcium fluorite-based glass. With this innovation, Nikon developed several types of ED glass suitable for various lenses.
They deliver stunning sharpness and contrast even at their largest apertures. In this way, NIKKOR’s ED-series lenses exemplify Nikon’s preeminence in lens innovation and performance.

Its about design, glasses chosen, lens grind (spherical or aspheric) optical centering, mechanical stability and accuracy etc etc .... apochromats are so called because ...far far too much to go into here!! Suffice to say ... KOWA makes a very good scope (as does Nikon, Swarovski, Leitz etc etc)

As it happens, I've been using a Ray-Vin head on a Freeland base for many years. The 663 is replacing my little old Kowa 20X 50mm compact.

I love my KOWA TSN 82SV or something like that. I've loved my Nikon a whole lot because one day I brought my Nikon to school in an attempt to mock my vice-principal.

The previous day he had suspended a couple of dope smoking student by standing on the gym roof with a pair of inexpensive Tasco 8 x 21 cheapie binoculars. So in response I brought in my Nikon Earth and Sky on. 5' tripod.

I taught three periods that day and my classroom is on the second floor overlooking the playing field. On three separate occasions that day I had the spotting scope set up and my students saw three separate parties of dope smokers at different locations or corners of the playing fir and adjacent tree lines. We had to call the admin in order to carry out the correct reaction and we got to see three separate takedowns. The students were fighting over the spotting scope. It sure was funny

I'll let you guess what my rep was from that day onwards.

Cheers and buy what works for your eyes and your budget,

Barney
