I'm in the market for a new spotting scope and I'm having trouble choosing between the kowa 663 and the Pentax 80ed. I know about pelee wings, are there any other dealers I should be looking at?

I realize these scopes aren't in the same class, that's why I'm torn. Do I want the extra power of the Pentax and standard eyepiece size or the compactness of the kowa?

If anyone with experience with either scope has anything to share, I'm all ears.

It's main use will be for target rifle, other range duties will be secondary. Would the Pentax be too much scope for tr/ f class( someday)?

Thanks for any help

For F class, many use the KOWA TSN82SV with 25X LER eyepiece. I use one.

The 600 series is also very popular.. similar eyepiece.

The pentax is a great spotter but no where near as popular (not sure why).

So look for availability and pricing. Get a quality spotter stand (Ray Vin for me) and enjoy.

I have a Pentax 100ED. It's huge, but amazing!!!

If I could do it again, I'd do an 80ED with the angled eyepiece. You can really jack up the power with the eyepieces. I'd suggest NOT getting the variable eyepiece, the fixed are vastly clearer.

I have Pentax 80ED angled

Cameraland in USA was the very best price when I got mine.

Edit: I got the variable eyepiece and then last year got a fixed - as the previous poster says, much better option.

hey nb, they're on the other side of the country, but Vancouver Telescope is a dealer for both Kowa and Pentax.

in your situation though, I would go for the Pentax, as the light gathering power of 80mm vs the smaller 66mm on the Kowa is significant...about 47% more to be exact. that will make a big difference on cloudy days or at twilight or in general for higher resolution and magnification.

I got my Pentax 80ED-A from Binoculars Canada.com It is still on sale for $882 (scope body).

I have the zoom and the XW10mm fixed which is superb.

Thanks for the replys, I've pretty much decided on the pf80 with angled eyepiece. Can you recommend any fixed power eyepieces? I've read good things about the Pentax xw lenses, just can't decide which one.

Really depends on your goal.

If you wanna read a book 500yds away, 3.5. More field of view, 10, 15???

I have a 7 on my 100ED and I can honestly read the logo on jets that are 37000' up. It's part spotter, part telescope.

You're next want will be a solid tripod and geared head.... One word, Manfrotto.

The Pentax eyepieces are great.

You won't get a carry case with it.. I bought a pelican for mine. Production case is a great source. I think it's the creedmoor website that'll make you a cover if you want.

I picked my Pentax 80-EDa from Binoculars Canada.com. It was the cheapest I could find, and the service was great. They didn't have the eye piece I wanted in stock, but was able to bring it in direct from Pentax inside of 2 weeks.

Great scope.

Thanks,
Cal.
