From: http://www.chuckhawks.com/krieger_criterion_tour.htm

"Krieger barrels and Criterion barrels share floor space and personnel, but the clear difference between the two processes is cut rifling versus button rifling. Krieger barrels use steel (raw blanks) that has been cryogenically treated and then re heat-treated, whereas Criterion barrel material is not cryogenically treated."

Correct. Krieger's bar stock undergoes cryotreating.

Cryotreating steel destined for button rifling is a waste of time, as you undo most of what you are trying to achieve. Criterion is a different division of kreiger that makes barrels for OEM rifles such as Weaterby and for large batch orders for retailers such as Cabellas. Personally I don't like using the words Krieger and Criterion in the same sentence.

Actually, our own Rpollock has written a very good paper on the scientifically quantifiable benefits of cryotreating.

Its controversy commecially stems from patent infringement. It is why Krieger went from treating its reamed blanks to its bar stock.

While to each his own, the preponderance of eveidence supports its benefits as far as stress relieving is concerned, and its resistance to sliding wear. Cryo treating does not however resist the effects of vaporizing steel at the throat. It is not a panacea, just one step in producing near zero-stress steel barrels.
