Kropatschek, Vetterli Antiques?

The Swiss Vetterli version is an Antique since it is a rimfire. On the other hand, since the Italian Vetterli and the Kropatschek are centerfire repeaters they are modern firearms under Canadian Gunlaws.

Was wondering if the Vetterlis with box magazines are modified to only work in single shot mode does that make them antiques again? Also is box magazine ok if its chambered in rimfire?

RIMFIRES in general are okay, unless they are a .22.

The Italian Vetterli came out originally in 1870. Most, but not all, were modded to take the Vitali magazine in 1887 and they were manufactured with the Vitali magazine as the 1870/87 to the end of production in 1892 when they were superceded by the Mannlicher-Carcano.

The Vetterli-Vitali 1870/87/915 should, by rights, be called a Vetterli-Mannlicher, being that it combines the Vetterli bolt system with Mannlicher magazine. These rifles are a 6.5mm conversion of the old rifles undertaken during the Great War. Some were factory refurbished at least as late as 1938.

But the original 1870 Italian Vetterli was a single-shot and thus is an Antique. Ammunition can be made quite easily by starting with .348 Winchester brass.

Hope this helps.
