.... It seems that I'm likely to pick up a No.4 SMLE, with a just barely legal, cut, barrel. From past experience, I know the flash from a .303 with a short barrel is spectacular ! So, is the "flash hider" from the L1A1 or even an FAL, effective ? And are they screwed onto the barrel or silver soldered ? I would for reasons of safety, open up the end a little ! ..... David K.

The ones on the FNC1 were "flash eliminators" and yes they worked very well, from what I remember during our night shoots. I think they were held on with a pin, but may have been screwed on as well.
... Thanks for the reply/info. To be on the safe side, I'd probably solder and pin if there's a space for it. Threading the barrel could present some challenges ! ..... I figure it'd work pretty, well with a decent flash eliminator,scout type scope mount and maybe a fiber glass stock. ... David K.

they were threaded on and then a little round "lock peice was inserted (there was a cut out on the barrel for it)..then a cross pin was stacked into place ...you also had to get the proper size collar to index them to the barrel on the C1's..god I use to hate doing them

The barrel is threaded 9/16-24 RH and there is also a little groove cut on the bottom of the barrel. When the hider is indexed perfectly vertical, a washer is inserted into the slot and a pin driven in to retain it in place.
