its ex NZ army, but by all accounts is in good condition with sharp rifling

anyone with knowledge of 2nd hand SLR's tell me what to look out for ?

well , it looks like the flash hider and the carrying handle was removed , from the wear marks it once had a CH , these are easy enuff to replace but why was it removed? and also mag is shorten . hhhhm , what for?

Did that come from Century Arms USA? Looks like something they would cobble up

Contact aacollectible of this board for a flash hider to start with. Aussie issue furniture/carry handle shouldn't be too hard to find.

You mentioned the barrel, good.
- Is the back sight snug, firm and crisply adjustable?
- Is the receiver latch (not the right word and I'll be corrected) snug with no upper vs lower play? The sights are on different halves, and need to be as reliable as possible.
- Although the hinge screw is supposed to rotate, is there a minimum of play or twist when the receiver is opened? Ditto above.
- What has been done to the safety sear, or its empty slot, for selective fire or semi-only conversion. On the C1, the safety sear was tipped down when the breech block carrier closed, and the tail raised away from the sear. It is a safety feature, but sometimes the slot is welded full because it is also the full auto disconnector.
- How about the surface condition of the gas plug and gas piston? In Canada they were hard chromed and could be scratched by bored soldier cleaning them too hard.
- Is there a reasonably uniform finish, except on the obvious handling high spots?
- Is the butt on solidly? There is a mighty great coiled spring inside, that needs a compression rod-and-straight screwdriver to remove/replace.
- Then the usual questions about completeness and functionality as you move and handle the various parts.
- The trigger pull should not be a critical factor. It is a battle rifle not a target rifle, and the fixes are not hard.

That short mag has got to go! Likewise the ungunfriendly aftermarket thumbhole stock.

Spending the grocery money on ammunition. :runaway:

hahaah thats nothing new in my world.. luckily for me .308 is cheaper than .223 in most cases here

ok as for the flash hider, short mag, and the funny stock .. here in NZ we cannot have flash hiders, normal capacity magazines, or free standing pistol grips .. unless we have our E-catagory license .. which i dont.
( original flash hider also has bayonet lug.. another no-no on normal NZ license )

the mag is a specifically made 5 round mag, but there are no license restrictions on buying 20 or 30 round mags which regularly sell on our version of Egay .. Trademe / Tardme

the wood furnature is gettable, as is the stock and pistolgrip (but i dont mind the synthetic. and will probably slap a quad rail onto the front , dust cover weaver rail on top, and hack that barrell down .

i havent had a chance to look at the rifle ( its not the only 1 that the store has ) , but i have dealt with their salesman alot ( they know its me when i call now :D ) so i should be able to make sure i get a pretty schmick unit.

am heading down that way on business in a months time, will stop in and have a look see ..

Thank you very much to maple for all your tips and suggestions. i will make sure i have a look when i get down there

Felix- Can you get an E category licence? Is this something you can get by taking a course or paying for it? If so I'd go for it before buying and get a real, unmolested FN.

Is that a Lithgow rifle?

^ If you can do it (E Class) bud...get it! Max out any and all things gun license realted! Ask us Canucks who got screwed out of 12x.

yeah our standard test is written, with a seminar, and police do the background check and a certified firearms officer comes to your house to ensure you have somewhere to correctly store and lock firearms..

Build your safe big enough to live in:D.

I was rather surprised how your system works over there. Ran into a NZ'er two days ago who explained it and it seems an interesting set of laws you guys have... just like here:p

Go all out and get the unraped version after your E certification.

im inquiring about my E-catagory as we speak :) .. means buying a safe though :O damn .

at the moment , ive got the bare minimum :p loop and bar gun rack with a chamber lock :D does the trick

at least this way i can get a proper AR , not some gumped up thing with 5 round mags and strange bars connecting the stock and grip
