Lacquered steel cases - huh?

that's probably what they are tooled up to do. They dont reload, so they dont change.

I'm glad it's steel, if they used brass I'd be very upset about the berdan primers.
 
It's cheaper and uses something they have lots of - steel. You will also see them use steel core bullets instead of lead.

fewer case head seperations/torn rims
lower pressures due to larger internal case volume
lighter weight

BTW the Germans started it. But the Russians liked it and captured some plants with the technology and continued to use it. The Evansville, OH plant in made 45ACP with steel cases during the war as well.

Steel bullet jackets too, even in the lead cored ammo.
 
the ak47 series of rifles roughly chambers and has a brutally rough extraction requireing steel cased ammo thats why the ak is SO reliable

if you use brass cased amoo in the ak you can get case seperations FTF and fait to extract in semi
