SO, again, went out to try some more ladder tests.

Today I used 7828 to do two identical tests as it has given the appearance of being somewhat compatible. You all have been following and know I've been using Retumbo, H1000 and 7828.

Again, for reference, Vanguard in 300WM , Benchmark barrel installed by Craige Douglas , VX Freedom 4-12x40. Exhaustive attempts were made to get 190 LRAB to shoot, no dice.

At last test I switched to 180gr Sierra Gamekings and 7828 was the better results.

Loading at 3.400" as it is the furthest out I can seat the projectile and have the case neck fully contacting the bullet.RP brass , 215 primers.

I have also had enough of my chronograph acting up.Velocities are listed.

The optics/mounting are fine, I tested this today also.

So here it is...

And on that note I think I'm retiring this rifle. No more testing this year for me, I'll try my luck maybe next season or make this item go away.

How many firings on the brass? Have you annealed them? The reason I ask is I have just gone through something similar except mine shot good and then went to hell. Annealing is bringing it back

How far are you from your target? Those holes look pretty close together to be any farther than 100m.

You won't get as much useable data from a 100m ladder as you would from a 300m ladder.

this kindof resembles my experience with my one and only Vanguard
the good thing is Weatherby bought the rifle back from me because it wouldn't meet their sub-moa guarantee
the bad thing is I spent almost half the rifle's value on ammo

I like what looks like a node around 76 grains. What I don't like is nearly 3200 FPS with a 180 grain and IMR 7828. I'd be concerned about pressure spikes on hot days. I'm not a 300 win mag shooter but I have to get close to dangerous pressures in my 300 rum to get over 3250 with a 180 grain and R25.

I know you watch your brass but that seems fast to me.

As the rifle is intended for hunting only I don't foresee it ever being used in hot temperatures.I even try to restrict my load testing to cooler conditions. From others I have spoken with this doesn't seem to be excessive.

Sierra is showing 76 as a max load at just over 3000 ft.

Hodgdon is max of 78.5C for a speer 180gr. at over 3000 as well.

I imagine the tighter chamber has a bit to do with it.

You say your optics are good. What makes you so sure? The way the shots are spread out like they are doesn’t make sense with the speeds being like they are on target #2. First thing across my mind was scope.

I took my bore sighter with me to see if it was moving POI after the shots. It did not move it's position on the grid.I put it away after the first ladder.
