well, it is time to get the wife a gun (against many peoples advise, haha).

i am looking for something with decent open sights, she doesn't need a scope, she has eyes that would do an eagle proud. that doesn't kick too much. based on the shooting we have done, milsurp 8mm in a k98 is about her limit recoil wise.

i would prefer inexpensive to shoot and/or reload. she wants something big enough "for a 6 point buck if i see one" (this is 6 point western count btw).

i am thinking maybe a CZ527 in 7.62x39 or maybe a nice mauser from tradex. or even a savage model 20 if i can find one. or possibly a marlin in 357.

any suggestions? oh yeah, remingtons, brownings, and anything with a plastic stock needs not apply.

Consider a 7mm-08 in a bolt action of your choice. About the most perfect ladies cartridge i can think of. I started 2 daughters on a 7mm08.

If these were my choices, I'd definitely go for the Mauser, 6.5x55 should do the trick nicely.:)

Forget the 'x39'
 
A .270 is a great caliber. If the rifle is too large, try a youth model. I also have a .250 Savage for sale(lever, iron sights, and has bases for a scope), at a reasonable price
 
I guess someone should ask , "What is it for?" In BC you have a wonderful selection of game available for hunting and some of it is pretty big.

The rifle I got my wife is a Husqvarna .30-06. I had the stock shortened for her, and installed a declerator recoil pad. A Ruger front sight with a post insert and a XS ghost ring rear sight. Right now the rifle wears a Leupold 1.75-6X in Warn rings, and the rifle is slung with a Safari Ching Sling.



The important thing is that this rifle is light - about 6 lbs. If the rifle was much heavier whe wouldn't want to carry it, and weight is a serious disadvantage of surplus rifles - many weigh close to 10 lbs loaded and slung.

The .30-06 can generate enough recoil to be a problem when chambered in a light rifle, so I load her ammo at about 90% of it's potential. A 180 gr .30 caliber X bullet at 2500 (her bear load) will get the job done. Fun shooting can be accomplished with 200 gr cast bullets and a light load of SR 4759.

Buy her a nice, modern bolt action that fits her well and will easily take a scope. Not too heavy. No milsurps or lever actions as they don't always fit well and some are harder to scope and harder to manipulate with inexperienced hands.

Choose a caliber that can be down loaded with lighter bullets to reduce recoil. Something like, for example, a .308 loaded down to 300Savage velocities with 150 gr bullets would be very easy to shoot and you could ease her into it and work your way up later. 30/06, .270. 7/08, 260, 7x57, 6.5x55 are other suitable calibers.

Buy her a nicer rifle that what you have, cuz someday down the road, it may be yours anyways, and/or it will open the door for you to buy a nicer rifle for yourself. :)

lol: x2. Women come in different weight and sizes and tolerances for recoil. I've see women who could easily handle recoil far better than some men. Truly, I don't think it's a gender issue but more one based on tolerance, just as it is for men. My daughter had a criteria, light rifle, mild recoil. I bought her a Stevens 200 in 7mm-08 and scoped it with a Burris Fullfield 2 in 4.5-12. She's been very successful, loves the gun. I'm adding a Timney trigger for Christmas. Bottom line is don't underestimate what a women can do...:D
 
My spouse had the same requirements, wood stock, open sights, light recoil, but enough energy to take a sizeable deer if it presented itself. Actually she was much more specific, it had to be a savage model 99 in .300 savage, so thats exactly what she got and shoots. Actually I have about 400 loaded rounds for her as she loves to shoot it, especially mid range handloads. So when my 16 year old daughter was asked which gun she wanted to hunt with, it was the same thing but she was more specific, a savage model 99f in .300 savage but she prefers a peep sight (so she has one as well).

I have had my spouse and daughter shoot other guns, my 30-30 and all three of my 6.5's but they will not let me have the savage model 99's from them. They seem to dislike the cocked hammer on the 30-30 if they have to decock it with mitts on etc. and its hard to find a 6.5 with more modern rifle sights as all of my 6.5's upon purchase had the sights removed and scoping was the only option. I guess whatever they like and will shoot alot might be the best way to go because my spouse couldn't care less about bullet weight or velocity, she just wanted something she likes to shoot.........probable like the vast majority of gun nuts.
 
I had a Marlin 30-30 lever, it kicked like a pissed off mule.

A Tikka in a smaller caliber under my X-mas tree would make me happy. 6.5x55 or 7mm-08. The nice thing with the Tikka is it has a little shorter stock than others I've shouldered.
