I wonder if this will cause the Federal or Winchester with LC brass to become more expensive here too? I’ve already noticed cabelas and CT selling the Federal AE .223rem for over $25 for a box of 20 (think I also saw a box of 100 for $120ish). I remember paying about $0.75/rd for a 500pk (25 boxes of 20), and I was late to the party lol.

Apparently not content with its efforts so far to make gun ownership more difficult and expensive for America’s 100 million firearm owners, a source tells TTAG that the Biden administration is taking steps to reduce the availability of .223/5.56 ammunition available to the average shooter.

A person with knowledge of the situation tells us that, more than just “considering” the move, Winchester, which operates the US Army’s Lake City ammunition plant, has been informed that it may no longer sell M855 and SS109 ammunition produced in excess of the military’s needs on the civilian market.

How would that affect the civilian supply of .223 and 5.56 ammunition? We understand that as much as 30% of the commercial market’s sales volume of .223/5.56 is produced by Lake City.

The motivation here is obvious. The Biden administration is attempting to further spike the price of ammunition, squeezing the owners of America’s favorite rifles…the scary black ones that the president assures us are only good for killing people and taking down Kevlar vest-wearing deer.

Let’s face it. Even the hapless Biden administration must realize that they don’t have any realistic prospect of getting another “assault weapons” ban through the Senate. Instead, they’re doing the next best thing. They’re trying to make shooting most AR-15 rifles as expensive as possible for Americans who own between 20 and 25 million AR platform guns

We’ve reached out to Winchester for a statement on the Biden administration’s move, but haven’t received a response yet. We’ll updated this post when we do.

In the mean time, it’s just possible that the Biden gang may have shot themselves in the foot (metaphorically speaking, of course) with this ploy. John Cornyn and Chris Murphy pulled out all of the stops to hammer out a compromise deal in the Senate that got 10 Republicans to sign on. They announced it with great fanfare this past the weekend.

Now, as the actual legislation is being written around that deal framework, the Biden clown car crashes right into the middle of things with a heavy-handed maneuver that’s sure to further anger tens of millions of gun owners less than five months from the election.

Will the ten GOP Senators who agreed to the Cornyn/Murphy deal stay on board now? Possibly. Maybe even probably. But the administration’s ham-handedness here can’t make it any easier for the bipartisan ten to maintain their resolve in the face of a snake-belly-low move by the ostensible leader of the Democrat party.

NSSF: Biden’s Move to Limit .223/5.56 Ammo Would Cost Hundreds of Jobs and Jeopardize Military Readiness

Yesterday we reported the Biden administration’s efforts to halt the sale of excess production of .223 and 5.56 ammunition from the Army’s Lake City plant on the retail market. The move is a transparent attempt by the White House powers that be to limit the supply of AR-15 ammunition and raise the price of ammo produced by other manufacturers, thus hurting tens of millions of gun owners.

TTAG got the following statement on the situation from Mark Oliva, the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s managing director of public affairs . . .

NSSF has been in contact with officials at Winchester Ammunition regarding the Biden administration’s consideration of halting sales of excess M855/SS109 ammunition. Winchester was informed that the government is considering restricting the manufacturing and commercial sale of legal ammunition produced at the Lake City, Mo., facility.

This restrictive action would immediately jeopardize 400-500 jobs, significantly reduce the availability of ammunition in the marketplace, and put the nation’s warfighting readiness at risk. Both NSSF and Winchester strongly oppose this action.

NSSF is working with Senators and Members of Congress to appraise them of these developments and turn back this counterproductive policy. Winchester officials are actively engaged with government leaders in Washington, D.C., to ensure their full understanding of the negative implications related to this type of sudden and reactive action.

This policy of ceasing the sale of excess ammunition is ill-timed and jeopardizes the fragile negotiations of the framework deal that was agreed to by the bipartisan group of Senators. Senators specifically requested The White House allow the Senate to negotiate in good faith and without interference to arrive at their agreement.

This policy to deny the sale of excess ammunition not only would freeze over 30 percent of the 5.56 mm/.223 caliber ammunition used by law-abiding gun owners, it risks the ammunition industry’s ability to surge production capacity for national defense if the costs to maintain the present workforce isn’t recouped through sales to the civilian market.

This threat of restricting ammunition sales is another example of political agendas interfering with lawful commerce of law-abiding gun owners. The Obama administration attempted a similar halt to sales of “green tip” ammunition through regulations proposed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). That maneuver was scuttled after gun owners and Congress cried foul on the regulatory overreach.

Sucks for american shooters but I wonder if this might be a benefit to us. That excess may have to be sold somewhere else now and we are the closest market.
 
If there is one thing Biden knows how to do it is to inflate prices. However there are sufficient other manufacturers that in the long run the slack in supply will be picked up.
 
Only in a country as free as the USA can the gov't tell you who you're allowed to do your legal business with.

I said not that long ago in a different thread about ammunition in canada that the next thing the klaus Schwabians running Canukistan are going to do is start banning specific ammunition like military surplus and the insanely powerful 9mm because it can shoot through schools and blow the lungs right out of a deer don'tchaknow.
 
Just my humble opinion, but for me across the board I have found PMC XTAC 5.56 and PMC Bronze .223 to have performance comparable, if not better, than the Federal/Winchester equivalents, and that performance comes at a cheaper price (at least for now) - the difference is $4-5 a box cheaper than the American brands, depending on where you go.

That said it is still sad to hear Biden trying now to choke the supply chain without regard to the large job losses that will occur, for something that he cannot justify. No doubt he is taking notes from Trudeau.

They are sharing, and not because they are caring.

Given Biden's aim at 9mm ammo, it wouldn't be surprising if that was on the list here, too.

Once HGs are no longer available, they'll go after the ammo next.

Even if it weren't the case Barnaul is hardly the thing to save us from this situation. It barely helped when it could be brought in and was hardly well priced for what it is.

I 110% agree with you. Given what they already said about adding, what, 500 or so more makes/models to the OIC (likely likely based on what the Polys recently submitted to them in a pictorial hit list), almost all, if not all PCCs will get hit. That will heavily reduce retailers wanting to carry pistol ammo. I fully suspected they are targeting the supply chains and as you said, Biden already let the cat out of the bag. No surprise that some retailers are in short supply of 9mm, and I mean look at this - Tenda, who I usually use as the barometer to gauge ammo prices...look at this...Winchester white box of 50 124gr 9mm...take a guess how much it is? I had to do a double take. This was like, what, $15.99 - $17.99 a couple of years ago? It's Winchester white box...not some premium ammo...
