picked up a beat to hell LAKEFEILD .22 from a fellow C.G.NER (price was excellent)& decieded to "tweak" it up.
1-shimmed trigger @ back screw - .22 thou.(brass shims found @ auto.store-feeler gauge) & replaced main spring with ball point pen spring. now breaks very clean @ around 2.5 -3 lbs, was 7-8 lbs. very little to no creep. 14 year old son helped me with his eyes & dexterous fingers
2- "squeezed" sides of trigger plates to take up side -side play
3- removed bur from bolt ejector claw - sticking and not 100% ejection ,filed with my wifes metal nail file - she's gonna kill me
4- bought wife flowers + new file , I'm learnin as I get older
5-hacked off front sight,filed square,sanded to remove cut marks, dremel tool "BY HAND -NO POWER " to target crown - 60deg. bevel maybe -close to that.
6-cleaned , oiled , reassembled. very happy with end product,
7- bedding kit is next - action + first 1" of barrel I think as there is only 1 screw that holds everything together I will need at least that to get a decent fit / sand to float rest of barrel
8- stock is sanded 100 gr./220gr./300gr. & ready for finish
- not sure if this has been shown before , but it was all pretty easy & she shoots like a dream now!
* all info was found online ,I AM NOT A GUNSMITH if you try any of this pls make sure your gun is safe when your finished *

sorry- reason for post , ANY TIPS would be appreciated , my first crack @ this. does crown look correct? does anyone forsee any problems with shimms? I just followed what I had found on rimfirecentral.
p.s. shoots like a dream now.
 
I did a similar thing with my Lakefeild-Mossberg MKII

I used a spent 22rl case to shim it... im at about 4lb trigger pull (good enough for me)

my blueing was too far gone, so i painted mine with Stainless steel paint

why cut the end of the barrel off? isnt longer better??

the crown was gone on the end of the barrel ,looked a bit like it had been cleaned from the end with a rod.I had quite a few flyers when I first tried it.also barrel length = more velocity not nessecarily better accuracy. I have read most police snipers have gone to around a 20" barrel now. incredible difference now after the cut and crown. , groups are very tight now.
 
Most .22's have a diminishing return on bbl length. I believe somewhere around 15" was best from a velocity/weight/accuracy standpoint. I'll see if i can find links

The following information is from Mark White's book "The Ultimate Ruger 10/22 Manual and User's Guide" . Apparently, he cut a 28 inch barrel two inches at a time and measured for muzzle velocity.

So, based on this, it would seem maximum velocity in a .22 is achieved at 16" with a loss of about 5 fps/inch over the next 12 inches.
