I was shooting with my son yesterday and he hands me the mark 2 and says the shell won't come out. I pry it out with my knife and the case is cracked lengthwise down the whole length. We shot another 50 or 60 rounds and the same thing happened again. Do I have ammo problems? It was Winchester bulk, I usually use Federal, but I was using up leftovers. Or could I have a problem with the gun, it's old, but appears to be in very good condition.

Could be the brass but if the chamber is oversize from use, the winchester brass may stretch to the size with an occasional brass that is harder and cracks instead of stretching. I have 2 Mark IIs and put thousands of gopher seekers thru them with no problems, winchester 333/555 only.

Well, the only logical way to find out is try different ammo!

Seriously, try a well known ammo and see if it does the same thing. As Winnipeg Toymaker states........it could be an oversize chamber, but if the gun has been fine before that, it is unlikely. I don't know the history of your gun. Typically a 22 will never see such wear, so it would have to be a manufacturing defect or damage caused by an owner. Winchester is a little different than Federal/CCI ammo. Go back and try the Federal, and then try subsonic ammo to see if it does the same thing.........it has a lower pressure spike.
