I have an opportunity to purchase a Lakefield Mossberg Model 500 in a 20 gauge serial number H006***. It is wearing a 28" smooth bore barrel. Sadly, the owner painted the stock flat green. The barrel is shiny. The bluing about 70%. The gun was dropped off for me to look at / try out. It doesn't seem like the gun has been fired for a long time. The action was dirty and there were some feeding issues. The shell lifter was not always raising the shell high enough. A good cleaning and cycling the action a number of times seemed to fix things up. What is a reasonable offer for this gun?

It will probably shoot well for the rest of your life. Pay as much as you like, as little as you must.

Paint stripper isn't expensive. If you don't like what it uncovers, cover it up again.

Ahhhh Tewner, the simplicity.
I totally agree.
$200-$300

Thank you guys for sharing your advice. I don't know if my reasoning is correct, but in my mind its worth more now that it was when I received it...but I put the time into it. At the start it had feeding issues. Now it runs pretty smooth. If I added a heat gun, steel wool, & Tru-Oil...it would be worth more yet...to me anyway. I'm doubtful $150 would be enough to make a deal. $200 seems just enough. I may need to see if he will settle between there.

Does it have a vent rib barrel? Whats the choke situation (I assume fixed, but what size)? 3" chamber?

These would help determine value. That said, I think a lot of people are under-valuing the gun. Assuming it functions properly, and the only real issue is a painted stock, plus 20ga are less common so that would add to the value a bit, I would put its value at $200-300 depending on features (300 if its got a vent rib barrel with a mod choke, if its a full choke then its probably not suitable for steel shot which would bring the price down for me, if its a full choke with no vent rib, then I'd say $200 although I wouldn't even bother buying a shotgun without a vent rib if my plan was to use it for birds)

Its not a vent rib barrel and it has a fixed full choke. It is good for 3" shells. I'm not worried about the wood underneath. The guy had a thing for painting his guns. A year ago, my brother picked up an H&R 088JR 20ga from the same fellow. The wood was painted an automotive white. I stripped it for my brother. About 4 coats of Tru-Oil later, it looked like a new gun. The wood was perfect.

Anyway, I made an offer of $175. The guy said its a deal, and keep the hard case so that was a bonus. I have a 14 year old son who is following my steps into hunting. He loves it already. No reason a 20ga won't take a deer this fall or a turkey in the spring.

Jesus, you are fussing about one good night of drinking.

It's a cheap gun that has been poorly looked after. What more is there to say. Mount Sweetness nailed it on the first page.

I see you bought it. Hope it works well for you. Probably will. Use your skills like you did on your brothers gun and make it something your son is leaking steam to own one day. That's how to get your $175 worth out of it. Good luck and good shooting.
